Lyoto Carvalho Machida (born May 30, 1978) is a Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and the current light-heavyweight champion of the UFC. Machida won the belt via 2nd knockout of Rashad Evans at UFC 98 in May of 2009. The son of a Japanese-Brazilian Shotokan karate master, Yoshizo Machida, Lyoto holds an undefeated record that includes victories over former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, and current UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn.
Machida is noted for his controversial karate-influenced striking style that implements an unorthodox stance and an elusive strategy.
Machida won the UFC light-heavyweight championship by defeating Rashad Evans at UFC 98 in May of 2009. His first defense was a successful although controversial decision over Mauricio Rua at UFC 104. The controversy surrounding the decision led to an immediate rematch for Rua, who in turn took the belt from Machida at UFC 113 via knockout.
