Many major MMA publications consider Matyushenko to be one of the top ranked light heavyweight fighters in the world.
Matyushenko defeated Alex Schoenauer by unanimous decision to become the first ever light heavyweight champion in the IFL.
Matyushenko successfully defended his title against Jamal Patterson winning by TKO in the second round.
After the financial collapse of the IFL, it was announced that Matyushenko would be participating in the newly rescheduled "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" pay-per-view event on January 24, 2009 in Anaheim, California at the Honda Center.
