met Carlos Santana in Las Vegas, but she really didn't and I felt kind of guilty. FiveKnuckles.com: (Laughs) I'll tell you what, in Las Vegas it's no harm, no foul. You can get away with that kind of stuff. If it makes you feel any better, I run into Elvis Presley a couple times a week. Besides playing practical jokes on people, what do you do to keep busy in Vegas when you're not working?
Stitch Duran: I spend as much time with my family as possible. Last year I worked 45 major events and that's not including the smaller ones. Whenever the weekend rolls around, I'm gone so Monday through Thursday I try to spend time with my son Daniel who's playing football in high school. I try to spend as much time with him and my wife Charlotte as possible and I try to take care of myself in between my traveling time.
Recently, I've been responding to a particular young lady named Mia that's been inquiring about how to become a cut person. I get emails all the time about people wanting to do what I do based on what they've seen. I always try to respond back and give them encouragement. I also hang around some of the gyms in the Vegas area. I'm an old school boxing guy so I go to the some of the old boxing gyms around here and hang out with my friends.
FiveKnuckles.com: Everybody used to hang around those old boxing gyms back in the day, but you don't see many of them around anymore with the advent of MMA. What are some of the old boxing gyms that are still open?
Stitch Duran: It's funny you bring that up because those were the only gyms around here when I first moved to Vegas about 15 years ago. Johnny Tocco's was the top of the food chain when it comes to the classic gyms. There used to be Golden Gloves Gym. There used to be Richard Steele's gym. I remember Nevada Parker's and Top Ranked Gym. Those were all the prominent gyms that all the great fighters would use when they came into town. Fighters like Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Mike Tyson always trained there.
Today, the only one still left is Johnny Tocco's. All of the other gyms went by the wayside. Now, there are still a lot of fighters that have their own gyms, like Floyd Mayweather Jr. for example so there are more private gyms being developed than public gyms.
FiveKnuckles.com: Vegas is the fight capital of the world and fighters from everywhere come here to pursue their dreams, but it's not so much the dream of being a professional boxer these days. Most fighters come here for MMA.
Stitch Duran: That's pretty much the transition that's going on right now. Everybody is getting attuned to mixed martial arts as opposed to boxing. I was in Switzerland a little over a month ago with Vitali Klitschko and people recognized me there, but they recognize me more so through the UFC which is hard to believe for an old boxing guy.
FiveKnuckles.com: Well, the groundwork is currently being laid for a takeover and I think it will be more evident as time passes. What surprises me is when you go to any of the MMA facilities around here, you see little kids...
