No Silva lining for Michael Bisping at UFC 110
by Joe Rimmer on February 21, 2010
coming across as down to earth on the third series of the TUF show, and being fairly respectful beforehand. Bisping is well known in the U.K. for his down to earth reputation and is extremely popular. But a little smack talking has put payed to that in the States. But doesn't every fighter talk a little trash? Of course they do. But the rivalry between the two countries on TUF season 9 made Bisping public enemy number one leading up to that fight.

Not every American dislikes him though, and Rampage Jackson's presence in his corner suggests Bisping is training with top level partners.

So where does our poster boy turn next? The regrouping Nate Marquardt may seem a step to far at this stage, Yushin Okami fights next month, as does Nate Quarry. Kendall Grove and Mark Munoz also square off soon.

Whatever the opposition, expect to see improvement in 'The Count' and one thing is sure, he will have a little island cheering him across the pond.

 |  (56) Comments The Hitman: very very few people expected silva to walk through bisping like you said. and silva basically had that fight. it wasnt very close if you watch it again Natalia Baage: Why'd ya have to bring Andy Murray into this, Joe? He did really well at the Aus Open this year! :D But otherwise... good article. :) Storm: Bisping does take a lot of crap from people. he isnt THAT bad, he just isnt THAT good either. his only losses are to former champs in Hendo, Wandy, and Rashad. only being stopped once. personally, i feel that Hardy and Daley will soon trounce him in popularity for the UFC in UK marketing. Joe Rimmer: A lot of people thought Silva would finish Bisping, from what I read. Most people were predicting first or second round KO's or TKO's. I was pretty confident it would go to the judges. Maybe not walk through, but certainly beat Bisping. I think the fight was pretty close. Bisping took the first round, the second was quite close until the choke, and the third was close until the late knockdown. But I may have been watching Bisping more than Wanderlei. As for Murray, I'm a big fan, and I was gutted for him. But Roger's too good! Joe Rimmer: It was close in the sense Bisping was in no great danger until that flurry late. Although I agree he got saved by the bell. I think that was the problem with his style in the fight though, trying to counter punch Silva without any great power isn't a great idea. It just looked like he was trying to not get knocked out. Rather than trying to win the fight himself. Silva is going to come forward at some stage and connect though, and he did just that. Like I said, I think Bisping needs to have more confidence to push the pace and take the risk, otherwise he's just asking for trouble. And yeah I think Murray may win a grand slam or two, but not many. Storm: its true imo too. i arguably had Bisping winning the 3rd round up until the last flurry thrown. he wasnt doing much, but he was staying more active then Wandy was. much like in the 1st round. Bisping just out worked Wandy in the first... plus had a couple takedowns. if Wandy didnt get that flurry at the end of the 3rd... i wouldnt have been surprised at all to see the decision go the other way. Storm: i think Bispings striking last night looked horrible. his "flow" or "fluidity" with his strikes looks weird to me. not to mention that it looks like his hands are made with tissue paper or something. his strikes dont appear to have anything on them power wise. The Hitman: really, imo the fight wasnt very close. wandy obviously did more damage than bisping. he outsruck him and after the 1st round he pretty much stuffed every take down. not to mention bisping was saved by the bell when wandy had that guillotine locked in. Joe Rimmer: I think it was a close fight to an extent. If Bisping had avoided those two situations at the end of each wrong then he could have won, but he didn't and he lost. He needs more in his arsenal if he is to step up to that next level. shawnb: when bisping dropped down he became a beast. he was hungry, mean, agrresive, and his cardio improved as well. he fell into the "fame, dont lose a match, be smart" trap and has sucked ass in his last two fights. for some unknown reason i like bisping. but he is gonna die a quick mma death if he wont stop trying to be a counter puncher. YOU HAVE NO POWER BISPING. ffs, use you're whole game...sheesh HappyHamer: I think Bispings biggest problem is that he has come to believe in his "Poster Boy For UK MMA" role too much. He was a big noise in UK MMA, winning the most prestigious title in his weight class very early on in his career. Unfortunately, the sport was still in it's infancy in the UK, and Mixed Martial Arts was something of a misnomer. Some Martial Arts would have been a better description as the sport was populated with people who excelled in one area and had very little skill in the others. The best hopes for UK MMA now rest on the shoulders of people like Terry Etim and John Hathaway, young men who have come into the sport as it takes on a more global appeal, rather than promotions staying within their home borders. thebutterflybee: Ok, at the third attemp of writing this, because I am losing the will to live today, I shall abridge my point. Bisping fights with fear, which is his main problem. Not the fear of getting hurt, but the fear of commiting to something. It is not the fact that he has zero power in his punches or kicks, its that he throws them half-heartedly. What you can see is that he is pretty much starting to come back out as soon as he goes in. It's as if he is afraid to commit to whatever he is throwing in case he makes a mistake and gets caught in something. I dont even think this can be blamed on the Hendo KO because he was like this in the Leben fight too (although at the time I said he was fighting cleverly). I agree with DV in the majority when he strips out his anti-brit rant (although I can imagine that being quite funny at the time, because I hate it when you meet people that talk absolute poop) in that Bisping is not awful, is actually pretty good, pretty well rounded, and very good cardio, but that I think we have quite clearly found his limitations as a fighter. Personally I dont think he will improve any further unless he commits to his punches and takedowns etc. But, even if he doesn;t, like I have said before, not everyone can be a champion. If he has reached his limitations then so be it. He has still been pretty succesful, and lots of fighters make a good career as a gatekeeper for the top 5, or 10. Its no reasons to hate on him, because that logic would make you hate anyone who doesn't fight for the title. Patrick Sullivan: Bisping really impressed me this weekend. I thought he won the majority of the fight, it's just that Wandy did enough to steal the second at the end. I thought it was tied 1-1 going into the third, which I saw Silva as winning before the knockdown. I felt for him at the end. The judges made the right call, but it was close and it must be disappointing to lose a close one like that. I thought he was a douche when he coached on TUF but he said all the right things before and after the fight and looked very sharp in that all-important 15 mins between. What impressed me the most was Bisping's vastly improved wrestling. He's always had pretty good takedown defense, but his shot looked exponentially better than it ever has, and that's a good sign; he's still improving. Great fight, hats off to both guys. I wanted to see a vintage Wanderlei assault, but an exciting three round war of attrition works too. thebutterflybee: Hey, out of curiousity, I too was impressed by Bisping's attitude and comments btoh before this fight, and the Kang fight. But what confused me was that in the countdown and pre-fight clips Silva said that Bisping had been chatting loads of shit about him. This confused me. Was he talking crap himself to psych himself up or did I completely miss Bisping insulting him or something? D_V: Bisping was respectful. I think the fact that he has the aussie gf made him think that maybe if he was respectful they wouldn't boo his ass. He's obviously not ever going to be more popular than Wanderlei, it's debatable whether anyone could be, but I don't think he thought he'd be looked at as the bad guy. He really didn't deserve it. Wand was much more disrespectful. It's good to see though. Bisping just isn't likeable. He's the prototypical cocky Brit. Nobody likes the cocky colin ferrel brit. they like the smarmy self defacing hugh grant brit. He's just not playing his cards right. xdusty: what dv is trying to say is he wishes he could just be himself and have a 170lbs brittish chick with a small c cup and a full bush to snuggle up with at night and play with his hair until he falls asleep at night. however do to the high physical standards in this area, he's forced to pretend that shallow super models are what gets him going. its a cruel world.
