that was a mistake on my part." In 2006, he got the opportunity to come to the States and train with friend and Xtreme Couture teammate Mike Pyle. Kampmann had just one fight in the US before getting the call from the UFC; not bad for an engineering student that started fighting for fun.
"(MMA) started as a hobby," said Kampmann. "I enjoyed training, I enjoyed learning. When I got the opportunity to fight in the UFC, I realized I could do what I love to do, and make a living off my hobby. I'm really lucky."
Often billed as a kickboxer, Kampmann has actually been training his ground game for almost as long, making him more than just a converted muay Thai fighter.
"I was training muay Thai, but at the same time I was training submissions, no gi grappling, doing tournaments," he said. "I started out Thai boxing, but I've been training submissions for a long time."
At just 28-years-old, Kampmann still has a long career ahead of him and is probably just now hitting his stride. He doesn't give much thought to life after the cage, preferring instead to concentrate on training and competing.
"Before I came to the UFC, I was studying engineering in Denmark. I put that on hold, so maybe I'll go back to that," he said. "Or maybe I'll open my own gym. I like training guys and coaching guys. But as long as I enjoy fighting, I'm gonna keep doing it."
