MMA Elite Prospect Profile: Brendan Schaub Part II

as a background.

FiveKnuckles.com: In looking at your previous fights, you have a lot of power. You're training everyday with one of the most powerful fighters in the world. How do you compare your power to Shane's and how does the chin hold up training with that guy?

Brendan Schaub: Shane hits so hard man (laughs). I've been tested quite a bit between Golden Gloves and sparring with Shane and have never been close to being knocked out. Not even been flashed or dazed. I've been kicked in the head by Duane Ludwig, been super-man punched by Nate Marquardt, Shane's blasted me and never felt close to being knocked unconscious. I think it comes from my days of playing fullback at CU. Constantly taking hits. I was the wedge-breaker on kickoffs too. It's paying off now man; that sucked [laughs].

FiveKnuckles.com: Would you ever fight Shane?

Brendan Schaub: Never. Never, ever, ever. I don't care what the circumstances are. I would drop to 205 or put on 60 lbs. and fight super heavyweight. I would not fight Shane for a title shot. Nope. I wouldn't be here without him. What am I gonna do? Fight the guy who brought me here? You can fight your friends and be friends afterwards, look at Rashad and Keith, you know. Shane and I are so close though. Our families know each other...won't ever happen.

FiveKnuckles.com: So it would be champion and #1 contender?

Brendan Schaub: Exactly, I'll take number 2 man. Shake n' Bake (laughs). I'll be that guy at heavyweight. The thing is, Shane is older than me. I'll wait it out man, keep knocking guys out and maybe he'll hand it down to me.

FiveKnuckles.com: So, you've got the inside scoop. What's the deal with those mitts?

Brendan Schaub: Ya know what? This is what I tell Shane, (laughs) he is gonna kill me for saying this. To give people out there an idea how big his hands are. It's like a big hamburger with five bratwursts hanging off. That's what his hands are like man; just huge. Like yesterday at Easton's, they're like, ‘ok we're gonna do mount escapes now. Brendan, Shane, you two meatheads pair up. Then Shane rides his mount on me for I don't know how long, an hour man, it sucked. We have so much fun training man. You know, some days it sucks, but we have fun because were so competitive and always want to get the better of each other.

FiveKnuckles.com: Do you ever get the better of him in training?

Brendan Schaub: God, not that I know of so far, to be honest with you. He's good. Stand-ups my thing and I definitely hold my own in that category but he's not one of the #1 contenders in the world for no reason. I'd always look at the top 10 guys and be like Shane can beat them. What's Lesnar; top 3 or 4 or something? Whatever, his time will come.

FiveKnuckles.com: How do you see that fight going down, between Lesnar and Carwin?

Brendan Schaub: I see Lesnar getting knocked out bad.

Fiveknuckles.com: Can Lesnar take Carwin down?

Brendan Schaub: You know, Lesnar's a good wrestler. He and Shane come from that elite wrestling background. It would be a heck of a fight. I'd definitely give Shane two thumbs up on the stand-up any day; just from seeing he and Randy Couture go. Shane has the advantage in...
