MMA Elite Prospect Profile: Brendan Schaub

hell no. The facility does not matter and Jackson shows that, he's got the best in the world. It's not the facility, it's the coaching, training and talent he's got down there. You go to Jackson's camp and you're not gonna see world champion belts on the wall, UFC pictures and all this. He's kinda like, alright that's done, put it behind you and focus on who's next. I think that's key, I really do. Greg is an awesome guy and one thing you won't see is a bunch of egos around his camp. We're a close-knit team and I think thats what makes us different from a lot of the other elite camps out there like AK, Xtreme Couture and ATT. Everyone knows what everyone is doing at any given time. Everyone works so hard man. Everyone sees the blood sweat and tears and it makes you come together as a unit.

FiveKnuckles.com: Talk about your relationship with Shane Carwin. How did the two of you meet?

Brendan Schaub: Shane [Carwin] and I started off as a team of two. When I first got in there, Shane was in there, and it was kinda like, ‘You're a big meat head. You two pair up (laughs).' I was like, ‘Oh, what's up bro.' we didn't know each other or nothing. It was really, ‘your a giant, your a giant get together and lets go.' Ya know, I came from a football background and so did he and we just hit it off from there and trained.

FiveKnuckles.com: Tell us a bit about those early training sessions.

Brendan Schaub: I'll never forget this man. We were down at High Altitude and it was my first day of sparring. Shane was sparring a little longer than me and they just pair us up. We have no footwork or nothing man. We just stood in front of each other like the Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em robots. It was awful, but I left there thinking how awesome that was. He gave me a call up later that night and was like, ‘hey man, it's good to have a guy like you around.' And ever since that we developed a tight bond. Shane just likes to take hits it's crazy. I come from a boxing background so we have some pretty big stand-up battles. This last camp was kinda funny because he and I are so competitive and always trying to one-up the other. We're going and I hit him when the bell ends. Then he hits me and we're just trading punch for punch. The coaches had to come and break us up (laughs). But it's all love man. You know, I wouldn't be (expletive) without Shane man. Some of the guys I've fought, these big monsters, training with Shane everyday man... I look at these guys and think, ‘he's no Shane Carwin.'

FiveKnuckles.com: It sounds like the two of you have a lot in common. What are some of the differences between the two of you?

Brendan Schaub: Shane and I are definitely polar opposites in the ring. I talk a little trash and like to celebrate; you know, all the antics and just lovin' it... Shane hates that man. I remember my first fight, Shane and Nate gave me a huge talk. ‘Listen bro, that's not what we do around here.' But that's me though. I don't think of that stuff. It's just whatever comes to me, comes to me. As far as Shane, he keeps his head down. He takes...
