UFC 99: "The Comeback" Results
by Mike Williams on June 13, 2009
Franklin, 10-9.

Final result: Franklin wins by unanimous decision.

Cheick Kongo vs. Cain Velasquez

Round one: Kongo starts fast landing two straight punches that rocked Velasquez but Valesquez gets a takedown and gains mount then gets Kongo's back and tries to choke him out but can't quite secure it.  Kongo gives up another mount, squirms free but is taken down immediately again.  Velasquez lands some pretty big shots while the fight transitions around from mount to side control, back to mount. Kongo is getting dominated on the ground and when he is able to break loose, Velasquez takes him right down again.  The round ends with more of the same and a 10-9 victory for Velasquez.

Round two: Kongo hurts Velasquez with early punches once again but then they clinch up and Velasquez goes back to controlling the fight on the ground.  This time Kongo is sustaining more damage from ground and pound and the wear is obvious as he tries to get to his feet but is just too tired to fight of the barrage from Velasquez.  Kongo is trying to fight from the ground but Velasquez continues to land punches, hammerfists and body knees.  Kongo is getting abused as time expires.  Some may see this as a 10-8 but we'll score it 10-9 for Velasquez.

Round three:  Kongo lands the first punch of the round again but again gets taken down and punished.  Velasquez controls the first 3 minutes but Kongo shows tremendous heart as he works his way to his feet again and lands some knees to the body then a flurry of punches but Velasquez gets him down again and continues the beating.  Kongo is still trying to fight from the ground, throwing punches and elbows from his back but it's nearly enough.  Velasquez dominates another round and the fight,  10-9.

Final result: Velasquez wins by unanimous decision.

Mike Swick vs. Ben Saunders

Round one: In true Swick fashion he attacks immediately and gets Saunders to the canvas.  Saunders is doing a good job of avoiding serious damage.  Swick lands some body punches but is unable to really posture up.  Swick breaks free and gets to his feet, takes an upkick to the body then gets back in Saunders' guard.  The fight stalls and the ref stands them up.  They clinch to the fence with neither fighter able to find an advantage as the round ends in a 10-9 win for Swick.

Round two: Two kicks by Saunders do no real damage as they clinch.  They go to the floor and Swick finds mount position but Saunders rolls out of it then pulls guard.  With neither fighter able to gain advantage the ref stands them up again.  After some measuring Swick lands a huge right then stalks forward pouring it on as Saunders' legs cave in.  Swick gets on him and lands a few more as the ref steps in and ends the fight.

Final result: Swick wins by TKO at 3:47 of round 2.

Marcus Davis vs. Dan Hardy

Round one: The grudge match begins with the fighters measuring each other up, dancing.  Davis attempts two kicks then shoots for a takedown which is averted by Hardy.  Davis sweeps a leg and gets the full mount.  Davis lands some ground and pound and Hardy gets him to guard.  Davis postures and frees Hardy but takes his back.  Davis is unable to secure a choke but lands some punches and elbows to the side of Hardy's...
