UFC 3: The American Dream
After UFC 3, the UFC instituted mandatory qualifying bouts to lessen fatigue and the advantage of fresh alternates leading up to the finals. The rule was formed when Royce Gracie could not continue due to fatigue thus a fresh alternate replaced him and eventually won the tournament.
With no weight-classes in place, fighters soon proved technique could overcome size. Competitors such as Emmanuel Yarborough (600 lbs) competed against fighters such as Keith Hackney (200 lbs) and would almost always succumb to superior technique. Referees were also given authority to stop a fight in the case of a defenseless fighter and competitors wearing shoes were prohibited from kicking (later changed).
Eight-man Tournament Rules:
- No weight classes or time limits
- No biting, fish hooking, eye gouging or kicking (if wearing shoes)
- Fight ends with a submission, knockout, throwing in the towel or by referee stoppage
