UFC 7: The Brawl in Buffalo

UFC 7 featured an eight-man tournament and a superfight championship between reigning champ Ken Shamrock and UFC 6 tournament winner Oleg Taktarov. However, the event famously ran over it's three hour Pay-Per-View slot, to the dismay of viewers, cutting the final match from the PPV slot. Another draw was declared for the superfight championship as both men fought to a 33:00 stalemate. There were no judges for superfights at the time. The referee for the night was "Big" John McCarthy and Michael Buffer served as guest ring announcer for the evening.

UFC 8: David vs. Goliath

UFC 8 featured the first appearance of ringside judging in the event a fight didn't end by submission or knockout. Judging was implemented due to the fact that the three previous superfight championships had ended in anticlimactic draws. David vs. Goliath also pinned smaller fighters against larger fighters in a spectacle that featured first appearances from Don Frye and Gary Goodridge. At this time the UFC had begun gaining notoriety, but not all of it positive. Many viewed the events as barbaric. Senator John McCain of Arizona used the phrase "human cock-fighting" when addressing the sport with fellow senators and his constituents. The actions and stance of Senator McCain would later push the sport underground and set mixed martial arts back years.
