UFC 9: Motor City Madness

UFC 9

UFC 9 is the first event to feature non-tournament fights that were predetermined by the UFC. The main event featured the highly anticipated rematch between Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn. In their first fight, both men spent the majority of the contest circling one another failing to engage. Severn took the matchup via split decision. "Motor City Madness" took place in Detroit, Michigan, but was only allowed to be broadcast under modified rules. Fighters were threatened by penalty of arrest should they engage in closed-fisted striking to the head or if they landed head butts for this event only. Although several fights featured strikes with closed fists, no fighters were arrested as a result. By this time Senator McCain had succeeded in his campaign against the "brutality" of "no holds barred" events and the UFC was under heavy national criticism and was removed from Pay-Per-View by many major cable companies like TCI.

Notable Rules

- No closed fist striking to the head

UFC 10: The Tournament

UFC 10

By popular demand, the UFC decided to bring back the eight-man tournament format, which included two alternate bouts, for UFC 10 in Birmingham, Alabama. "The Tournament" marked the debut of UFC Hal-of-Famer Mark Coleman and ring announcer Bruce Buffer. Coleman burst onto the MMA scene at UFC 10 by demolishing his way through the field en route to 3 tournament victories; including 2 via TKO. He bested fellow MMA pioneer Don Frye in the tournament finals in his exciting MMA debut.
