5K Exclusive Interview: Opportunity knocks once again for Mack "da Menace"
by Tommy Kail on January 05, 2010
do you think that event is going to fare?

Mackens Semerzier: I think it's going to be huge man. All the fighters and fight fans from Virginia will be there. I know people from Maryland, Washington D.C., New Jersey, New York, and even North Carolina will be going as well. Anybody that can get around to it is going to attend. It's going to be huge. Unfortunately for me, I'm going to miss it because I won't be back from my fight in time. It goes without saying that I'm very happy for the state of Virginia and I'm glad the UFC has targeted us for an event. They have so much success in other cities and fans really feel privileged to when the UFC comes to town. I really hope the event is huge so they can come back again one day.

FiveKnuckles.com: Maybe the WEC will target a growing city like Virginia Beach one of these days with you on the card?

Mackens Semerzier: That would be a dream come true.

FiveKnuckles.com: Moving on to a more relevant topic, you're five fights into your pro career and already facing top level competition in the featherweight division. Is this a challenge you're ready for?

Mackens Semerzier: Absolutely. I have strong fighters pushing me and I'm putting the time into improving my skills. I feel that I have the right mind set about the things I have to work on, and about what fighting actually is. I'm not living in a dream world and I'm not expecting things to happen that aren't able to happen. Obviously, I would like more time to train, but I think I'm ready to compete with the best fighters. It would be nice to train full time, but I've been doing the best with what I have and I've been winning so far. I feel comfortable with my skill set and I'm comfortable with what I'll be bringing to the table on January 10 in Sacramento.

FiveKnuckles.com: You hear about fighters having too much too soon in MMA. What are your thoughts on that and how can you stay ahead of the game?

Mackens Semerzier: It's funny you say that. You do see that happen with certain fighters, but like I said before, if I was in Las Vegas or California where fighters are more noticeable, I might be a bit more concerned. Where I stand right now, I'm only popular with fight fans. People who follow the fight game that have seen me fight in WEC, or have looked up some of my other fights, may know who I am. Around here, it's not like I walk around and everybody knows me. Nobody recognizes me at all. I thought I got recognized one time, but it was by accident. It was the mother of one kid that comes to the gym. She came up to me and asked if I was an MMA fighter. I thought it was a random lady, but then she told me that I train her son so that killed it for me. I don't get recognized at all, but that's just the way it is around here. There's no reason to change anything. My last fight was on a Saturday and I was back to work on Monday so I'm definitely on the grind. It's...
