jiu-jitsu too. Shane's jiu-jitsu is very underrated. We had an "unnamed" big dude come in the other night and he just rolls this cat up. FiveKnuckles.com: You mentioned training with Amal Easton and Elliot Marshall from TUF 8.
Brendan Schaub: Yeah, Eliot Marshall and Amal Easton are my jui-jitsu coaches. The thing Shane and I do, you know, being so athletic, we can get away with some things other fighters can't. Amal and Elliot are now making us work in techniques and that's gonna be a dangerous combo. We've got the athletic ability and then you get technique... I feel I have pretty good technique but their technique; if you have a finger out of place they will call you on it. The thing they say is ‘that's terrrrrribblllle'. I'm like damn bro, we're in the class having the coaches yell, "that's terrrrrribblllle". Can't you take us to the side or something? You know, Shane and I walk in and people know who we are. Then we get to rolling around and everyone hears, "that's terrrrrribblllle" (laughs).
FiveKnuckles.com: Your dad studied martial arts. Talk about the influence he had on your game.
Brendan Schaub: My dad made us do Tae-Kwon-Do. My kicks aren't bad ya know. It's not Duane Ludwig style, but they're not bad. I haven't really gotten to show them yet. I am obsessed with K-1 fighting. My dream would be to compete in the World Grand Prix. It's funny because my brother and I grew up watching "Bloodsport", so we thought this was gonna be like Van Damme stuff. We'd get to learn all this cool (expletive) they do in the movie. Then you get there and you realize your gonna get punched in the face if you try and fight like that!
FiveKnuckles.com: How important is your mental preparation and having the right mentality going into a fight?
Brendan Schaub: Mentally you have to be tough to stay in this sport. I think it's almost 80% mental, just trying to keep it all together upstairs. A ton of guys say they wanna be world champions and whatnot but they're not willing to make sacrifices to get there. I know a lot of guys that kick (expletive) in the gym, but when the lights are on it's like, ‘who the hell is that?' Like Duane says, a lot of times when your back there, the tension is so high. I'll never forget, Duane's the most intense corner-man ever, Dude. I remember I was fighting this big 280 lbs. guy and Duane's says, ‘you better kill this guy'. Everyone else is like, ‘hey, good luck,' you know, ‘do your best.' Duane's like, ‘you better get out there and kill this guy. I'd let my wife fight him.' You're so nervous right before the fight, thinking, ‘what the hell am I doing here'. You're looking at your gloves wondering what the hell is going on. I remember this one kid looked back and told Duane, ‘why do I do this man?' Duane grabs this kid and yells ‘cuz we're the guys they make fucking movies about' I hear that, and I'm like alright! Let's do this! He's a great guy to have in your corner man, the best.
FiveKnuckles.com: You see guys like Canseco coming out and...
Brendan Schaub: Oh my god. I read about that and was like, ‘where do I sign up for that fight?' Sign me the (expletive) up! In Japan? My dream is to fight over there and this numbnuts gets...
