Flyweights, Cruiserweights, and Pantyweights

people into buying the pay per view, which translates into more dinero. The move would undoubtedly benefit some of the lighter 205-pounders like Rashad Evans, Dan Henderson, Shogun Rua, Steve Cantwell, Luiz Cane, Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin as they’ll be able to maintain their muscle, shed the access fat and become faster. Additionally, this could also rejuvenate careers of stars whom fallen on hard times. Yeah Chuck “Check Out My Mohawk” Liddell is getting older and nobody wants to see him fight for the light heavyweight championship. But for a cruiserweight championship? I wonder how much commotion and bank a Liddell vs. Franklin title fight could make. The thought shouldn’t be too far removed though. Zuffa already experimented with a 195-pound catchweight bout when Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva headlined UFC 99 in Cologne, and the organization will do a repeat performance at UFC 103 in Dallas with Franklin vs. Belfort. Again, this is a good idea conceptually … but the downside is it’ll thin out the light heavyweight division and it’s already difficult to find awesome mixed martial artists at heavier weights. For that reason alone, the addition of a cruiserweight division shouldn’t happen yet. As the sport grows over the next two years, I’m sure there will be an influx of bigger fighters and this is an idea that should definitely be re-visited. But as far as I’m concerned, Rich Franklin is the imaginary cruiserweight champion of the world.

Kelly – As long as you don’t start a new column called “Harvey’s picks,” we’ll all overlook the “Imaginary champion” comment and strike all thoughts of you playing with dolls on your kitchen table from our minds (I just shuddered). I actually agree that a cruiserweight division is a good idea. We all remember how the UFC got rid of the lightweights for a few years because there just weren’t enough to make a division interesting. Now with fighters of all shapes and sizes knocking on the doors of the Zuffa mansion, the talent pool is getting deeper and it wouldn’t take long to fill a cruiserweight division if they decided to form one. Besides the marquee names, it only takes a cursory look at all the aspiring fighters who show up at TUF tryouts to realize there’s more guys training out there than the Muriel boat lift. But one eerie factor that has to be considered is The Spider (and not “Da Spyder”). If there were a 195-pound division, is there any doubt that Anderson Silva would simply dominate it? Sure Zuffa could use it to get more mileage out of the Liddell tank by setting up the cruiserweights, but I don’t see his chances at 195 being any better than they are now at 205, especially with Silva in that range. By the way, do I sense Mohawk envy?

Issue #4 – Could M-1 Global become the death of Strikeforce?

Bear – Absolutely, positively not! Your BFF has seen the keyboard junkies go apeshit over this whole fiasco, painting M-1 Global and the company’s President Vadim Finkelstein as if they’re some raging, terminal doggie bag of Hepatitis. I mean sure, practically every single organization they co-promoted with in the past has closed. Pride is dead, Bodog Fight is dead and of course Affliction is dead. But I don’t blame M-1; I blame the organizations. I like to think of M-1 Global more as gonorrhea because if it goes untreated after a while, it can cause blindness and M-1 Global blindly led these...
