Dan Miller Exclusive: "I'm not afraid to go to the ground with Demian Maia."
by Tommy Kail on January 29, 2010
for position for the next crack at the title?

Dan Miller: There's no doubt that the middleweight division is one of the toughest in the entire world. There's a bunch of fighters that can be considered top ten and everyone else is trying to knock them off. It's not my decision to say who gets the next shot so I'm not even going to attempt to give my take. I got other things to worry about, but the UFC always gets it right and Anderson Silva knows there are enough hungry fighters out there that want the title.

FiveKnuckles.com: Is there one particular fighter in the division that looks really good right now?

Dan Miller: I'd have to say Nate Marquardt. Nate looks as good as any fighter out there right now, but he still has his work cut out for him. I know firsthand that Chael Sonnen is one tough fighter with a ton of experience. Nobody should be counting him out. If Chael wins, then he would have to be next in line after Vitor [Belfort]. As a fan of the middleweight division, the Marquardt/Sonnen match-up is the one I want to see.

FiveKnuckles.com: You have one of the most effective guillotine chokes the UFC has seen in a while. Talk a bit about how you've been able to pick up a couple victories as a result of that particular move?

Dan Miller: It's funny you say that because I've never really tried to perfect the guillotine choke in any way. It's a very basic move that opens up many times over the course of a fight and it has to be locked in very tightly to finish an opponent. I drill it in practice, but never really go for the move because it wastes a lot of energy and if my opponent doesn't tap, I end up on my back. I finished one fight in the IFL against Dave Phillips with the guillotine because I just couldn't pass it up. Against Jake [Rosholt], he put his head down and left his neck right out there so in my mind I had no choice. I've finished two fights that way and the announcers were impressed so I guess I'm now known for having a tight guillotine (laughs).

FiveKnuckles.com: I see your brother Jim is confirmed for UFC 111 in March at the Prudential Center in Newark, but it looks like you're going to miss out on the chance to fight in front of your hometown crowd when the UFC returns to New Jersey?

Dan Miller: Jim was lucky enough to come out of his last fight healthy enough to take a fight on two months notice. If I come out of my fight healthy enough, I wouldn't mind being on that card either, but that's a tough call. It's not really up to me, but I sure would take the opportunity if it presented itself. I don't know who it would be against or how it would come about, but I would love to fight on a UFC card in New Jersey in a place that's only thirty minutes from where I grew up.

FiveKnuckles.com: Finally; and I asked Jim this same question too... where do fighters draw the line in fighting someone they're really close to?

Dan Miller: I guess...
