Gilbert Melendez Exclusive: "El Nino" stays calm in the center of the storm

for us because people are still on the UFC side and they save their money for those events because they know what they're getting in a B.J. Penn fight, or they've been following Rashad Evans since he first put on four ounce gloves. In my opinion, Strikeforce should take advantage of the CBS fights because they're still two years away from being on pay-per-view, but the building blocks are there with Fedor some of the other talent.

FiveKnuckles.com: The UFC puts on pay-per-views because it's a known money maker in the fight business, but the CBS platform is as good as any. If your fight with Josh was in front of 4 million sets of eyes; that could've been big time for Strikeforce.

Gilbert Melendez: It would have been huge for the organization. I think it would have garnered interest from even the most casual fans of the sport. You know, that's what people have been telling me, but all in due time. That's the thing with Strikeforce; I know Scott [Coker] has been in the game for some time, but some of the others at Showtime are new in MMA so they don't understand the timing of it all. They try to go too much off of statistics and demographics and try to figure out what the people want through those avenues. They don't really understand where and when they should push a potential great match-up. They just put Fedor's name on the event and expected the fans to show out. It's not like it was unsuccessful, but there are other fighters who can steal the show, and that gives fans something more to look forward to. I don't think they promoted the other fights on the card that much at all. The bottom line is, at the end of the day this is the fight business and what sells these shows is the fights.

FiveKnuckles.com: I couldn't agree with you more. It only makes sense that a fight like Melendez/Thomson II be shown to as many fans as possible. Speaking of exciting fights, what was going through you mind when Scott Smith made that great comeback to follow up your act?

Gilbert Melendez: Man that was crazy. I wasn't into that fight early on after what I went through, but it definitely picked up in the last three minutes. It was a bit hard to watch because Scott was getting beat up, then out of nowhere, he turned it around and came back strong. I was actually back in the locker room changing and Scott Coker was back there with me. I could see the look on his face; he was a bit shocked to see Cung on the ropes. Nothing bad or anything; he was actually happy with the fight, but I can see that he didn't expect Scott to come around. It was a very memorable fight. I think it was one of the greatest comebacks of all time, especially against Cung who nobody was expecting to lose.

FiveKnuckles.com: Let's just say a lot of fans were surprised with how that one ended up. I keep bringing it up, but the entire night was like a roller coaster ride. Honestly, it was one of the best events I've seen in a while. Everybody was on the edge of their seat for your fight with Josh. It was a hard act to...
