Everyone was waiting for the big punch. During The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, Matt Mitrione and Marcus Jones went toe-to-toe - exchanging take downs and trading punches.
Halfway through, Jones' arm sunk around Mitrione's neck in a guillotine choke attempt; but it wasn't tight enough and Mitrione shrugged it off. While they kept on trading punches, Mitrione was taken down a few more times before, perhaps, losing the first round. But it wasn't even 10 seconds into the second round before Mitrione stormed on and clocked Jones with a right hook, ending the fight by knockout.
Now, armed with a 1-0 record, and the experience of another camp under his belt, the former NFL football player will take on the infamous Kimbo Slice as both try to get another notch on their UFC career belts. UFC 113, on May 8, marks the second time that Mitrione will aim to prove that he's one former football player who can cross over into mixed martial arts.
Recently, "Meathead" took the time to talk to FiveKnuckles.com about his progression, his tactics, and his thoughts on Rampage vs. Rashad.
FiveKnuckles.com: What'll your game plan be against Kimbo Slice? Use your reach and stand?
Matt Mitrione: Actually, no. What I plan on doing... I think I'm going to try to lace my gloves with sticky glue, and every time I punch him, I'm gonna try to yank out a little bit of his beard. Because every time I jab him or straight left him, I'll pull all his whiskers out. If I get all his whiskers out, I think maybe it'll take away some of his strength. Because I think he's very similar to Samson.
FiveKnuckles.com: That could be interesting.
Matt Mitrione: Yeah. I don't know if they're gonna check my gloves. I think that I can sneak my way in without them checking them. And if that doesn't work, I'm gonna try my very best to sneak a frying pan in there and bang him over the head with it.
FiveKnuckles.com: You don't think they're going to find the frying pan?
Matt Mitrione: You know, I'm always trying to find some kind of angle to win this fight. Self-preservation.
FiveKnuckles.com: What's the biggest change you've made to your game since leaving the show?
Matt Mitrione: Since I left the show? I'm still the same fighter. But I have made quite a few pretty significant modifications. Essentially to my ground game. I'm more patient. I'm more comfortable on the ground. I've gotten to the point where I'm comfortable defensively so I can now become more offensive. And I think that suits me pretty well. I've always been a relatively good scrambler, I know I have confidence there. With Duke Roufus, he really showed me that there were very small minor modifications that I could make in my stand up game that makes it more energy efficient and more effective. I've really been trying to focus on all the tidbits that he's teaching me, and I see them working. So it's good business.
FiveKnuckles.com: So you really don't mind where the fight with Kimbo goes?
Matt Mitrione: No, not at all. Wherever it goes, it goes. Top, bottom, top of the cage, on top of the frying pan, jump in the crowd - it doesn't matter to...
