If I said Roy Nelson was a "well-rounded" fighter the pun might arouse a chuckle, but the fact is, he's now proven to the world that he belongs in the conversation among the legitimate heavyweights. Inspired by "The Karate Kid" movie, he trained in Shaolin Kung Fu in his early years before taking up jiu-jitsu and becoming a decorated grappling champion. Now the recipient of a six-figure UFC contract after winning the 10th season of Spike TV's "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series, Nelson is a jovial and fun-loving guy with a skill set that should be taken very seriously.
Nelson recently took time to speak with FiveKnuckles.com in an exclusive interview and as always, he spoke his mind on a wide range of topics including his upcoming opponent Stefan Struve, where he sees himself as a UFC heavyweight, and his feelings on Kimbo Slice.
FiveKnuckles- Roy, thanks for taking our call today. Before we start, I want you to know that we're a website that's built by fans for fans so we're not to try to twist your words or go out of our way to try to make you or anything you say look bad.
Roy Nelson- Don't worry, I'm the most honest guy out there, so if I look like a douche then I look like a douche.
FiveKnuckles- You do tend to speak your mind and I think a lot of people respect that.
Roy Nelson- I just think it's one of those things where if you can be honest with yourself then you can be honest with other people.
FiveKnuckles- What are your thoughts on your next opponent, Stefan Struve?
Roy Nelson- Stefan is definitely a big guy and I think he's also shown that he belongs in the UFC after winning 3 of his 4 fights, only losing to (Junior) dos Santos who I think is like #6 in the world so if I can get past Stefan it will put me right in the mix of all the top heavyweights.
FiveKnuckles- Where do you see yourself in the UFC heavyweight picture right now?
Roy Nelson- If I can get past Stefan, I'll just keep working my way up and fight for the belt one day, hopefully sooner than later.
FiveKnuckles- Struve is 6'10", how do you train for that kind of height? Do you have a guy who's even close to that tall that can simulate what he does?
Roy Nelson- What we've been doing in the gym is just putting everybody on each other's shoulders and putting broom sticks in their hands.
FiveKnuckles- Are you away somewhere to train for this fight or are you home?
Roy Nelson- Still at home. I'm now changing the name of my home, instead of saying "home" we're just training at "The Country Club." (laughs)
FiveKnuckles- How did it come about that you got your jiu-jitsu black belt from Renzo Gracie?
Roy Nelson- Just from working with Renzo and knowing Renzo through the IFL, I wanted to get my belt from him. Renzo's a legend in the sport.
FiveKnuckles- A lot has been made of your physique, but you've shown the world that you can fight at your weight and that your cardio is very good. Is it just genetics? Are you just a big guy?
Roy Nelson- I think I'm just a big guy, but I call it the "athletic build." A lot of great athletes have...
