Alistair Overeem declares boxing as the superior combat sport over MMA
by Hubert Lau on July 21, 2011

Strikeforce's heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, declares boxing as the superior combat sport when compared to MMA according to mmamania.com.

"Let's cut to the chase, there's a lot of money to be made in boxing. It is the most popular combat sport out there. I mean, MMA is doing really well and it might overtake boxing but boxing is still the number one. If you look at the revenues made by boxing it is a big difference, a big difference." Overeem said.

Overeem has expressed his interest in jumping into the ring, rather than the cage, recently when he voiced his desires to fight Wladimir Klitschko. Klitschko is a heavyweight multi-titled champion from Ukraine who sports a 56-3 boxing record, highly regarded as one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world.

It is unclear if a boxing match between Overeem and Klitschko would ever materialize in the future. In the meantime, Overeem is sidelined from Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix's semifinal round due to an injured toe. He was originally scheduled to fight Antonio Silva, who will now fight Daniel Cormier.

 |  (44) Comments JujitsWho: He's not wrong. At least not yet...........................It's coming though. Sooner rather than later. Mtx: The title is a bit misleading :P Basing the decision out in popularity and money made he is definitely right. Not sure how long it will take but as JJW said, MMA will surely surpass boxing at some point. Wandering_Minstrel: I think Overeem needs to steer clear of boxing. Especially against someone like Klitschko. Lay'n'PrayNINJA: Shocking that Overoids is making these claims after backing down from the tournament... Shocking. /sacrasm Lay'n'PrayNINJA: As far as a Superior Combat Sport, he is dead wrong. There is no comparison between using two striking points, and zero ground work, to MMA. Not even close. The Hitman: This title makes him look bad. He is actually correct, and he says that someday MMA will take over boxing. He never says anything wrong and he isn't dising MMA. flyangler: Poor choice of title by the author. Cryptic_Soldier: Im sure it was meant to draw in readers... It was a clever (however misleading) title. It got all of us to go WTF IS HE SMOKING and open the article right? Thats what a title is supposed to do. Just Sayin devils advocate and all... Was I the only 1 to notice Reem pulled out cause of an INJURED TOE???? WTF IS THAT!?!?! Cryptic_Soldier: Worse than a Tito Excuse IMO^^^ Hizoka: sounds like hes trying to cover the fact that he would of poped positive for roids if he fought when he was told to Suicidalforlife: This title is total crap things like this anoy me ..... Hilarious how when he pulls out with a toe injury everybody dives on him for juicing like it's instant proof ,benefit of the doubt not come into play? IwishIwasMMA: It is probably HGH.. So, I doubt he would be caught anyway. HackBennys: Barry Bonds' dome went up like three hat sizes since he first started playing baseball. It's crazy to see pics of him from back in the day, he looked like a regular guy, actually a little scrawny, now he's huge with a head the size of a small planet. HGH was originally intended for dwarves to stimulate growth, I wonder if it would help a normal person get taller. Does anybody know? Cuz I would like to be a few inches taller. Not that I'd do it for that reason, just curious. Cryptic_Soldier: Reem is as natural as most low grade beef. Suicidalforlife: Seems to be I'm about the only person around here that thinks Overeems not juicing, maybe your right, if he is he'll be caught I'm sure, can't go on forever with out getting stung.
