Alistair Overeem is best known for his striking but also possess a deadly guillotine choke but as Frank Mir points out, Overeem might be too bulky to use that submission against Brock Lesnar in their upcoming bout at UFC 141 according to mmamania.com.
"Guys, like a Jon Jones-type, with a real long, thin forearm are way more menacing than a guy with like a Lesnar-type arm and I think that's kind of what Overeem's done to himself. He's gone from a Jon Jones-type forearm to a Lesnar so I wonder how that's affected his guillotine," Mir said.
The guillotine choke has been Overeem's go-to submission in the past, ending eight of his bouts with that technique. However much of those submissions came from when Overeem competed at light heavyweight and as Mir pointed out, Overeem's added bulk at heavyweight could adversely affect the effectiveness of the choke.
"You don't really see guys with really big arms pulling off guillotines. Another way I try to explain it to people is the triangle. The guys with long, thin legs are way more menacing than a guy with thick legs and it seems like when they put the choke on, it's not really like bone digging into the side of the neck, it's softer, it's across the neck and my jaw line, it's more surface area," Mir said.
The guillotine choke is just one weapon in Overeem's arsenal but if Mir's analysis is true, it's one weapon that won't do much good in his fight with Lesnar.
Will Overeem's submission skills play a role in a fight many believe the Dutch kickboxer will keep standing? In a matchup where the victory can be determined by a takedown, all the speculation will be answered when Overeem faces Lesnar at UFC 141 scheduled on December 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
