Alistair Overeem isn't believing the hype, at least not yet anyway.
During an interview on MMA Live, Overeem was asked about the Shogun Rua/Jon Jones light heavyweight title fight currently slated for UFC 128. He gave his take on the highly anticipated bout:
"No I don't think so," said Overeem. "Shogun has been through a lot, seen a lot. He's a very clever fighter but so is Jon Jones, not to take anything away from him. Jon Jones in my opinion is a little bit more athletic. But I think Shogun, he's a clever guy, strategic guy, good stand up, good ground, aggressive. He's going to put pressure and I think he's going to get Jon Jones."
Despite odd makers and fans backing the 23-year old wonder kid, Overeem is still standing firmly behind Rua. The two have history together as they fought at PRIDE 33 in 2007. Shogun knocked out the 205 pound Overeem in the first round.
Overeem also gave his prediction on tonight's fight, which pits the Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko and the surging Brazilian Antonio Silva.
"I would give it a 60-40 for Fedor," said Overeem when asked if Silva had a chance to take down one of the greatest of all-time.
Of course if Fedor emerged victorious and Overeem were to defeat Fabricio Werdum in April, it would set-up one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights in quite some time.
When asked about the potential bout against Fedor, Overeem seemed very pleased with the idea of them meeting.
"In my opinion it's one of the biggest fights at the moment, waiting to happen," said Overeem. "The fans want to see it and I want to make it happen."
