Alistair Overeem to face Tony Sylvester at "Ultimate Glory" on Oct. 17
by Jacob Camargo on October 08, 2009

Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem now has an opponent set for the Golden Glory 10th anniversary event as he will take on Tony Sylvester in the co-main event of the card.

The Overeem vs. Sylvester bout will be one of the numerous MMA matchups on the event. The card also features K-1 bouts as well.

"Ultimate Glory" takes place on Oct. 17 in Amsterdam and will be headlined by a K-1 bout between Alexei Ignashov and Semmy Schilt .

Overeem has long been rumored to be participating on the card as previous reports suggested him close to fighting TUF 1 cast member Sam Hoger and K-1 veteran Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga.

Thirteen fighters competing on the event hail from the Netherlands-based Golden Glory camp, including Semmy Schilt, Siyar Bahadurzada, Dion Staring, Ruslan Karaev, Alistair Overeem, Valentijin Overeem and Stefan Leko.

The Oct. 17 bout against Sylvester will be Overeem's first MMA bout in nearly a year. He has gone 1-1 thus far in K-1 action this year, losing to Remy Bonjasky and defeating Peter Aerts at last month's K-1 World Grand Prix 2009 Final 16. Overeem will take on Ewerton Teixeira at the K-1 World Grand Prix final in Dec.

Overeem has yet to defend his Strikeforce heavyweight belt since winning it in Nov. 2007 when he defeated Paul Buentello. He was originally set to defend at Strikeforce's June 6 event but was forced to withdraw due to a hand injury he suffered in a late night bar brawl. Overeem was then set to fight Fabricio Werdum on Aug. 15 but the lingering hand injury derailed his return yet again.

Overeem (29-11) is unbeaten in his last five MMA bouts, but has not fought since defeating Gary Goodridge at Glory 10: "The Battle of Arnhem" last November. During his 10-year career, he has fought for such promotions as Rings, Pride and Dream. Overeem has finished 28 of his 29 career wins and he holds notable wins over the likes of Roman Zentsov, Sergei Kharitonov, Paul Buentello and Vitor Belfort (x2).

Also, Overeem is still expected to compete just eight days later DREAM 12. His rumored opponent for the Oct. 25 card is Makoto Kawawa.

Sylvester (11-2) is 8-1 in his last nine bouts, however, he has not fought since scoring a first round TKO win over Roger Minton last December. His only loss during the sucessful streak came against current UFC fighter Chris Tuchscherer at YAMMA Pit Fighting's only event in April 2008. The King of the Cage and Fightfest veteran has finished all of his 11 career wins.
