A heavyweight showdown between Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem and recent UFC castoff Todd Duffee is official for Dream "Dynamite!! 2010" according to multiple sources close to the negotiations.
Duffee first hinted at the match-up on his twitter account, but later removed it for fear of being denied a short-term visa. There was also speculation that Overeem would face former WWE superstar Bobby Lashely, but that match-up was squashed when it was revealed that Lashely was asking for a six-figure payday.
Instead, FEG, Dream's parent company, settled on Duffee for $60,000 and an undisclosed winning bonus, though Duffee's manager, Monte Cox was less than enthusiastic about his client accepting the fight.
"I'll be honest, I argued against taking the fight," Cox told MAFA. I'd rather he have time to prepare and be at full strength... but he was adamant that this was a special opportunity and he wasn't going to pass on it and regret it later on. He said 'I'm a fighter... this is what I do.' How am I supposed to argue with that logic?
"This is one of those opportunities that come around once in a lifetime. Todd isn't 100% and there isn't enough time to get 100% ready, but he felt like it was a dream come true to fight against one of the best, if not the best, heavyweights in the world."
Though not widely considered to be the best MMA heavyweight in the world, Overeem is certainly in the top 10, but there is no contention about his status as a pure striker - Overeem bested Peter Aerts, Gokhan Saki and Tyrone Spong all in one night to become the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix champion.
Considered a very bright young heavyweight prospect Duffee (6-1), is coming off of his first loss as a professional fighter at UFC 114 when he was dropped by Mike Russow at the end of a three round fight that he dominated throughout.
He was subsequently dropped from the UFC as well for undisclosed attitude issues, though the promotion had reportedly planned to bring him back to face Jon Madsen at UFC 121. Those plans were derailed when Duffee was unable to compete however, due a knee injury.
