One of the unluckiest UFC cards in recent memory has been dealt yet another blow, as former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit has become the latest fighter to withdraw from an upcoming high-profile fight at UFC 108 due to injury.
An undisclosed injury suffered in training forced Condit out of his UFC 108 co-main event fight against Paul Daley. News of the Condit's withdrawal from UFC 108 was first reported by MMAUnltd.com.
According to MMAjunkie.com, Condit suffered an injury to one of his hands, though the exact nature of the injury is not yet known.
The UFC was aware of Condit's injury, as the fight had been removed from the UFC 108 lineup at UFC.com as of yesterday. It's not yet known whether the UFC will seek a replacement opponent for Daley at the Jan. 2 event.
The always brash Daley gave a very unsympathetic and noteworthy response of Condit's withdrawal from UFC 108 via the popular MMA forum, The Underground.
"Step up," Daley exclaimed. "You (expletive)...UFC 108 ... You know me, I'd except any fight. I just wanna fight. Condit is a big pussy IMO, i have inside information on that dude....it's all good as long as i fight. Koshcheck...is a tough motherfucker, but i accept the challenge. Hazellet has sick subs, and is dangerous, but i except that fight too. Any top level fighter in 170lbs with a winning record. Joe make it happen."
The preliminary card for UFC 108 has been unscathed by the rash of injuries, however, its the event's main card that has been ravaged with injuries and illnesses. Condit joins other top-level talent that have withdrawn from high profile UFC 108 contests, including Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Gabriel Gonzaga.
Condit (24-5) picked up his first UFC win in his last bout, defeating Jake Ellenberger via split decision at Ultimate Fight Night 19 on September 16 in a bout which saw Condit get all he could handle from his younger opponent in the first two rounds. His win over Ellenberger was his ninth in his past 10 bouts, with his lone blemish during the streak coming in his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann at Ultimate Fight Night 18 in April.
Before his move to the UFC, Condit went a perfect 5-0 in the other ZUFFA-owned promotion, WEC, scoring wins over the likes of Brock Larson, John Alessio, Carlo Prater and Hiromitsu Miura
Daley (22-8-2) is on a three-fight winning streak and is coming off of a very impressive UFC debut where he scored a stunning first-round TKO win over Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 last month. He was signed by the UFC following the demise of Affliction, where he was slated to fight Jay Hieron at the ill-fated promotion's third event, which was canceled.
UFC 108 takes place on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV, and the event's main card will be televised live on Pay-Per-View. The event will be headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva.
