The long awaited UFC middleweight title bout between longtime champion Anderson Silva and challenger Vitor Belfort may finally happen at a currently officially unannounced UFC 112 event on April 10 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
News of the bout was first reported by Tatame.com, which has stated that Silva and Belfort have recently contacted an Abu Dhabi gym about training at the establishment before the fight.
The bout hinges on Silva's bothersome elbow, as their two previous fights were canceled due to injury. If Silva is not ready to fight in April then the Belfort bout will be pushed back to May.
First, Silva and Belfort were set to headline UFC 108 on Jan. 2, however, Silva pulled out of the event to recover from elbow surgery, which he had to remove bone spurs. Then, the fight was re-scheduled for UFC 109 on February 6, but Silva was again forced to withdraw due to the fact that his elbow's healing process has been slow and was still giving him fits.
Silva (25-4) hasn't fought since defeating former UFC light-heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 in August. His last title defense came in his previous bout about a year ago at UFC 97 in April 2009, where he notched a unanimous decision win over Thales Leites.
Since debuting in the Octagon in June 2006, Silva has put together an undefeated 10-0 record with nine of those wins ending via stoppage. He has also garnered other notable Octagon wins over Chris Leben, Rich Franklin (x2), Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson, Travis Lutter and Patrick Cote.
Belfort (19-8) made his return to the UFC in September, where he picked up his fifth straight win by scoring a very impressive first round TKO over former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin at UFC 103. Belfort has put together a solid 8-4 UFC record, scoring other notable Octagon wins over David "Tank" Abbott, Wanderlei Silva and Randy Couture.
With the possible addition of the Silva vs. Belfort middleweight title bout, UFC 112 is on its way to being a monster of an event, as UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn will also defend his title on the card and former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes will welcome renowned submission expert Renzo Gracie to the Octagon.
