Andrews Nakahara, the 2006 All American Open Karate Championships gold medalist and budding mixed martial artist, is set to make his fourth appearance for the DREAM organization at DREAM 13.
His opponent for the welterweight bout will be tough UFC and Pride veteran, Ryo Chonan. Nakahara, (2-1) has looked very impressive in his last two fights, winning both via TKO. The sole blemish on his record came at the hands of the legendary Kazushi Sakaraba at DREAM 2, in a match that saw the wily and dangerous veteran lock in a neck crank en route to a submission victory over the newcomer Nakahara.
Nakahara's match against Chonan will be yet another difficult test for the Japanese-Brazilian, a fact not lost on the exciting prospect.
"I'm training hard, but he is an expert," said Nakahara. "I've haven't done much since my last fight except train. He is a very complete fighter. He exchanges a little bit in the stand-up, has solid submissions, and great leg locks."
Most people will remember Chonan for his spectacular flying scissor heel-hook submission victory over current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The fight is still viewed as one of the most impressive submissions ever pulled off in professional competition, as well as one of the biggest upsets in MMA history.
Nakahara, who trains under K-1 Champion Francisco Filho, has also been working on his ground game with Magno Almeida, and was recently promoted to blue-belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's much needed training for Nakahara if he plans to compete in MMA as much as he'd like to.
"I want to dedicate a lot more time and energy to MMA this year." said Nakahara. "I would like to have at least three or four fights... and to win them all (laughs)."
DREAM 13 will air on March 22, 2010 from Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan live on HDNet.
