Anthony Pettis will have to notch at least two more victories before he can take a shot at the UFC gold says UFC president, Dana White, according to fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.
Pettis was the last WEC lightweight champion who was originally slated to fight the winner of the Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar bout for the UFC lightweight title. However when Maynard and Edgar fought to a split draw at UFC 125, their impending rematch postponed Pettis' shot at the title. Subsequently both Maynard and Edgar suffered injuries during training and are out of action indefinitely, further delaying Pettis' fight against the winner.
"That kid's in a bad position. He's supposed to be the next in line. All this craziness happens. [Edgar and Maynard] both get hurt, and it gets pushed back again. The first one is a draw, then they get hurt, and it gets pushed back again. But this is one of those things that happens in a sport like this," White said on fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.
Pettis opted to stay busy rather than taking a long layoff and is now scheduled to face the tough UFC veteran, Clay Guida, at The Ultimate Fighter Finale 13. Should Pettis be victorious, another fight will be needed to set up Pettis for the title shot as Maynard and Edgar recover from their injuries.
