Despite his unanimous decision loss to Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale, Anthony Pettis says he does not regret choosing to take the fight.
Following the integration of the WEC into the UFC, Pettis, the lightweight champion, was offered a title shot following the UFC 125 title bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. However, when that fight ended in a draw and a rematch was scheduled, Pettis decided to take another fight rather than wait on the shelf.
Pettis was given a main event fight with Clay Guida and was a favorite to win after a series of impressive, highlight-reel performances in the WEC. But Guida set a relentless pace in the fight and ground out a unanimous decision. The loss drops Pettis in the lightweight rankings and puts him out of contention for a title shot for the time being.
"I feel I had some holes in my game and Clay Guida and Greg Jackson did a good job of having a good game plan," Pettis said following the loss. "I've got to go back to the drawing board and get better there."
"Showtime," who is best known for his unorthodox kicks, was taken out of his game by relentless takedowns from Guida, who continued to smother the former WEC champ while on the ground. Pettis continuously attacked from his back with triangle chokes, but was unable to lock in the hold or get the fight back on the feet.
Though some believe Pettis' submission attempts from the guard were more effective than the minimal ground and pound from Guida, consisting mostly of shoulder strikes, Pettis disagrees.
"I just understand how the game works," Pettis said. "If he controls you, you lose the round. I didn't do enough to get up off my back, so big up to Clay."
With a positive attitude and a world of potential, Pettis looks to go back to the gym hoping to return to competition better than ever.
