A lightweight contest featuring Clay Guida and Anthony Pettis is currently being discussed for late May or June according to several sources close to the negotiations. The news was first reported last night on Heavy.com.
Pettis (13-1) was promised a title fight against the winner of the UFC 125 lightweight title fight between champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, but those plans were scrapped after the fight was declared a draw, triggering an immediate rematch.
Pettis, 23, who couldn't stomach the option of sitting around for the better part of 2011 waiting for his title shot, opted instead to call out a few big name lightweights, among them Clay Guida, who also competed at UFC 125.
Guida (28-11) is 6-2 in his last eight contests including a submission win over former MMA great Takanori Gomi at UFC 125. The Greg Jackson trained fighter has shown marked improvement in his past few fights and is riding a three-fight win streak with successive victories over Shannon Gugerty, Rafael dos Anjos, and Gomi.
