Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: "I want to be champion."
by Jason Benfari on November 22, 2009

"Before the fight I could see he had good boxing. I figured I would use Jiu-Jitsu techniques, but changed plans. When the fight started I felt very fast and when I saw the opportunity come, I finished it. I won by knockout and I'm very happy. It's my first time here and I felt a lot of pressure. Everyone knows what the UFC is, but I have a good team -- good coaches, so I was really confident for this fight. That is why I fought well. I think I have a very good opportunity here [in the UFC]. I've been training a lot, been fighting a long time. I think I can compete with the top guys in the UFC. I'm very experienced and let's see what happens. I'm going to be here and I want to be champion." -Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

UFC light-heavyweight newcomer Antonio Rogerio Nogueria showed U.S. mixed martial arts fans why he was once considered to be the world's best 205-pound fighter.

The former world class boxer showed off his highly regarded striking skills last night at UFC 106 against a man considered by many to be the divisions best young prospect in fellow Brazilian Luis Cane.

The two stood toe-to-toe in the first round with Nogueira seeming to find a home for his jab at will. Toward the middle of the round Nogueira also found a home for his vaunted left cross as well, landing it on more than one occasion and eventually sending Cane to the canvas with a first-round TKO loss.

With the win, Nogueira, who is the twin brother of noted UFC heavyweight legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, ups his overall MMA record to a sterling 18-3 and sets his sights on the divisions elite. He states that he wants the UFC's light-heavyweight title, but stopped short of agreeing to face current light-heavyweight champion and friend Lyoto Machida, classifying the fight as "difficult" due to their long standing friendship.

 |  (51) Comments mike5k: Has anyone ever heard little Nog say that he wouldn't fight Machida because of the Blackhouse ties/ friendship? I don't remember hearing either way. arlovskiviako: I think if they wanted him to he would fight Machida. D_V: machida isn't that close to the noguerias. they'd fight. it doesn't matter though because machida won't beat rua and lil nog would get smashed by rua in a rematch. there is no reason for them to fight. JujitsWho: I love how he just dominated one of the best guys at 205 in his first UFC fight......that makes me smile :) IwishIwasMMA: how can two fighters who are so ugly be loved by so many? anyways... the nogs have more heart than any other fighter in the ufc. the wars that they have been it proves this. I think we all need to see Rua smash Machida just so we can get to see the final super fight Dana is building up right now.. Rua/Spidey. I love Machida, but unless he can do something to stop Shogun, its REALLY unlikely he will win the rematch when there are judges watching that fight who are NOT holding portable video game systems. D_V: rua would smash spidey or lil nog in a rematch. People forget that anderson has zero takedown defense and rua's top game is more than dangerous. Lil Nog fought at his best against shogun looking like crap, too. He's improved his defensive striking snice they fought. He'd annihalate lil nog now. robert_j: I just find it funny that Machida has ONE bad outting and now, all off a sudden, everyone is on the Rua bandwagon. I don't buy it. Machida is a masterful tactician and will have a better game plan in their rematch. While I realize this does not guarantee a Machida victory, I just dont see Rua "annihilating" him. robert_j: I thought that was Fedor. Little_Kang: I've been a pride fan from the beginning D_V: my attitude is rubbing off, it's nice to jits tell someone to f right off. i started that trend. anyhow, there actually aren't any real machida fans, except maybe fight doctor at he other site. everyone else jumped on the bandwagon after the thiago silva fight and are either blindly defending the decision or outright switching ships to the rua express. i actually defended machida a little bit after the fight even though i was disgusted with the decision. i think lyoto's classy although he never should have done the hand raise in there and shouldn't have put the belt on in the cage afterwards. it just inflamed things. as for machida and a new strategy and master technician bullshit being thrown around. tell me when he's done anything different than he's always done. please, someone explain the new strategy and how it will be different form the last 16 fights. i didn't say rua anihalates him in the rematch either but he'll be the more confident fighter and the looser fighter for sure. he knows he'sbetter now. i would expect more of the last 2 rounds than anything else. arlovskiviako: Did you read the "Franklin will work shogun part" ? JujitsWho: Yeah, I did pick Chuck over Shogun because I didn't know who he was going to come out. We hadn't seen him since his fight with Coleman where he was still looking pretty bad. So saying he would be beat by Franklin at that time isn't a big deal. In the shape he was in he WOULD have lost to Franklin. As I said. You wanna be a prick your whole life and try to fuck with people go right ahead. I pick who I think will win. I don't just pick who I want to win. I've said this a hundred fucking times numbnuts
