B.J. Penn eyes possible permanent move to welterweight
by Giada Esposito on March 16, 2010

BJ Penn caused a stir recently when he revealed that he has been discussing a potential return to welterweight with UFC president Dana White. Now Penn has gone even further, stating the move could be permanent.

Penn is less than a month away from defending his UFC lightweight title against Frankie Edgar at UFC 112, and while he's quick to say that he's not looking past Edgar, he's also clearly motivated by the chance to challenge himself against bigger fighters.

"Yeah, I think there is a possibility of that," Penn told IGN.com. "I don't, in no way, want to look past Frankie Edgar. He's a good fighter; you never know what could happen. But if I go back to welterweight, maybe I'll try to give it a run, maybe fight a couple of fights there. We'll see how it goes. I might try to do it permanent. We'll see, I just don't want to rush anything, just take my time and go out there and do my best."

Penn won the UFC welterweight title earlier in his career by defeating Matt Hughes at UFC 46, but then left the UFC over a contract dispute before defending the belt. He had a chance to fight Hughes to regain the title when he returned to the UFC, but suffered a controversial TKO loss in the third round of their fight at UFC 63.

More recently, Penn made a bid to dethrone current welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94, but found himself physically dominated in a lopsided defeat.

Since the loss, Penn has returned to lightweight with a vengeance; defending his title with dominant back-to-back victories over Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez, two fighters who once fought as heavy as middleweight.

However, if Penn does decide on a permanent move to welterweight, he'd do so at a significant size disadvantage. Despite that face, Penn was confident when asked how he thought he matched up against top contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves.

"I think I could do good against some of the top welterweights," Penn said. "Yeah, pretty big guys, but you gotta live some times. You gotta step up sometime, huh?"

Penn is also open to the possibility of a rubber match with Matt Hughes.

"Yeah. Yeah, you never know what could happen. Let's see how him and Renzo go, let's see what happens there."

Penn is 15-5-1 in his career, but four of those five losses have come when competing against heavier opponents outside of the lightweight division.

He should just stay at Lightweight, be the most dominant champ ever, and then retire when there's no one left to fight. Just because he's had a couple of dominant back-to-back victories doesn't mean that he should fly the coop just yet. Mtx: Great read Giada I really don't want to see this happen. Just like WM, I just want BJ to cement his legacy at LW, I really don't care what he can do at WW. Damn BJ, you better not do this... Little_Kang: imo the top 3, maybe 5, could beat BJ. Andrew: Im all for BJ moving up to WW to stomp Matt Hughes, that would be a great fight and its probably the only fight Matt would take at this point against a guy who is close to a title shot. I know Penn would have to win probably 3 fights at WW but Matt isn't about to climb in the cage with anyone else in the top 10 execpt maybe Serra. HackBennys: This is why I like BJ, he's a fighter who will fight anyone and isn't afraid to challenge himself. Sure, it may be the wrong move for him, but atleast he's a champ that's not afraid to test himself. The same can't be said for guys like A. Silva, Couture, or even GSP because GSP doesn't ever step out of his comfort zone. thug4less: Good article but I can only shake my head at BJ. I'd like to see him defend the LW belt at least one more time before he starts thinking about moving up. Eh. We'll see. Ares: Hmm, I think he should leave more of a lasting mark as a dominant champion in the LW division before deciding to move permanently up to WW. I admire his wants to challenge himself with tougher competition, but I'd like to see him try and clean out the division a bit more before he moves up. Little_Kang: the only positive to BJ moving to WW is opening the LW division up ALOT more..... because we all know no one touches BJ at lw Mtx: Still not sold on it. Proving or challenging himself has nothing to do with fighting at another weight class. He still has lots of challenges at LW so why go up? Someone is dominant at a division and suddenly people start asking him to go up one? Meh, not my thing, I prefer watching him have a real legacy at LW, cause for me, thats the real challenge, never getting caught and going of as the best LW in history, isn't that enough of a challenge? Kable: You know what pisses me off about this whole Penn moving up thing, people are using the fact he was beat by GSP twice and Matt Hughes that apparently he has no skills at all the moment he moves up to Welterweight. Little_Kang: gomi vs bj 2! would be like the first fight but dam that fight was good to watch Kable: I believe Gomi is going to knock out Kenny. Everyone seems to think Florian is Penn Mark II or something. throwingshoes: i think kenny wont have a problem beating gomi. i would love to see that fight regardless. ashka: From a purely selfish perspective, I don't want BJ to move up permanently. The thing is, I love perpetuating a great fighter's legend status. I hate the downhill slide. I want to always remember them at their peak, that they were the best. In my perfect world, they would all retire while on top of the game and I was wanting more. But speaking realistically, I also love fighters that love to fight, and so full credit to BJ for wanting to stretch himself. He should do what makes his heart sing. The Hitman: dont do it BJ, dont do it
