BJ Penn talking to Dana White about a possible move to welterweight
by Giada Esposito on March 09, 2010

UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn has revealed that he's been talking to UFC president Dana White about making a return to the welterweight division in the not-too-distant future.

Penn held the UFC welterweight belt earlier in his career, earning the title with a victory over Matt Hughes at UFC 46, although he never held the title concurrently with his present lightweight belt. Penn ended up leaving the UFC a short time after winning the welterweight title, due to a contract dispute, and the organization responded by stripping him of his title.

The win against Hughes six years ago marked the last time Penn was victorious at welterweight in a UFC fight. He has come up short in three attempts since, once to Hughes and twice to current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

Still, all but his last loss to St. Pierre was controversial, and came against the two most dominant welterweight fighters in UFC history. The losses seem to have only spurred Penn forward to train harder and become a better fighter.

As Penn has dominated the UFC's lightweight division of late, the idea of a Penn return to welterweight seems to hold a lot of interest with fans and UFC management alike.

"Dana has expressed some things to me that he would want to see this year, maybe me in the welterweight division," said Penn on BJPenn.com. "We will see. I have got a tough fight with Frankie Edgar coming up. [And] there is always good lightweight talent. There is a bunch of welterweight contenders up there. I guess I would just have to say, I don't have my mind set on anything yet... I don't want to jump the gun and give away all Dana's plans!"

Despite his recent frustrations as a welterweight, the challenge of succeeding and making his mark against physically larger fighters seems to continue to be a lure for Penn's competitive spirit.

"My weight right now - I just finally got a battery for my scale - I think I am about 167.5 or 168," Penn stated. "You have got these big guys, they walk around [heavy] and they are strong. I don't know if I am the only guy, but I think it is about pushing yourself and seeing how far you go. And it's about failing sometimes - and failing miserably sometimes - but standing up afterwords and realizing what happened, and the mistakes that you made. But, I think that I cannot picture myself becoming complacent, staying in one place. Not that I could defend the lightweight title forever, I know that's impossible, you can't win every one. But, I think there is nothing wrong with pushing yourself, seeing how far can you actually go."

Penn, who is 15-5-1 in his MMA career, will next return to action when he defends his lightweight title against Frankie Edgar at UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi. Edgar, who is 11-1, has a three-fight win streak and is coming off of a submission victory over Matt Veach at The Ultimate Finale 10.

 |  (22) Comments D_V: People are so stupid. The guy had a close fight with Florian, who was physically able to control him on the cage. He was completely destroyed by GSP in the most embarrassing performance in UFC championship fight history. The most one sided drubbing of all time. Now he beats a few bottom of the top ten at best 155s and they think he could move to a weight class he never was that good in????? What happens when the next Florian is 190 on fight night???? I'll tell you what happens, BJ gets another beating. At least he's not running around disrespecting Edgar's chances to beat him. The MMA media is doing that for him. In a sport where Jens Pulver and chuck Liddell haven't beat anyone in several years because of the obvious evolution of the talent people are stupidly blind to what BJ's actual chances are at a weight class he is 1-3 in where the talent has evolved physically to a point where he can't show up at 168 and be competitive with top 5 welterweights that are 190. He can't compete with these guys anymore. He can't rely on being the only talented fighter. The sport has evolved. He's too small to compete at 170 GO HARD: i dont think its a good move for BJ yet, id like him to be cemented in the ground as the best LW champ ever, which he pretty much has but more convincing will always help. BJ is a beast at WW too... he could beat most of those guys. BJ is 1 - 3 as a welter weight, but look at who he fought, and really gsp vs bj 1 was really close. i dont see BJ beating GSP... but he will be a force at WW. me personally? id rather see him stay at LW. IwishIwasMMA: I agree that BJ may not be able to compete with all the WWs... but mind you he can definitely compete with most of the top 5... Fitch, Alves, GSP, and probably some others.. The Hitman: BJ needs to slow down a bit. he hasnt even cleared out his division yet. i dont think its a smart move at all for him, if i were him i would establish myself clearly as the best LW of all time and set the bar high for the fighters of the future. Mtx: I think that if he gains some weight properly (cause he hasn't done that in the past) he could hold his ground in WW, he may not be the best WW ever but he would definitely be a force to be reckoned with. The thing is, like GH, I prefer him at LW and really don't want him to make this move. Wandering_Minstrel: Where are they getting this "the fans want to see BJ move back up" from? I don't think anyone wants to see him move back up. I know I don't. He's an awesome fighter, but he's not getting past GSP and his name commands that he fights only contenders. He needs to quit listening to Dana and stay the LW champ, cuz after he beats Edgar, Maynard is next in line I believe. mike5k: My feeling is that the thinking behind this has very little to do with how well he can compete at WW, it's all about selling cards. Like D_V said, most of the media isn't giving Edgar a chance. If Penn's able to handle Edgar then there will be even less interest in the next LW title fight. If Frankie shows people that BJ isn't invincible at LW that will help sell the next fight no matter who wins. Little_Kang: I say let BJ stay at lw. Because really bj will never touch the 170 title, and that means he'll just be adding losses to record and thus putting a negative mark on his career. Let him domimate the lw as long as he can then retire GO HARD: i dont like him moving back and forth from LW to WW... the ONLY champ that should do this is Anderson Silva. He has proven that nobody can beat him at either weightclass q; ) but yeah BJ at LW is the best BJ.... and thats where BJ should be.
