"I think it's because of his so-called steroid use, and all of that, that B.J. felt it was an unfair fight. Just the whole thing about not being fair, and fighting fair, you know. That's what B.J. wants to get off of his back; The greasing stuff, the steroids, and all of that... We heard from certain people that used to train with him, telling us what he did in the past. That's why, we had a heads up on that. When you cycle steroids, you're not going to to test positive. You can cycle it right up to the time of the fight and not test positive on that. That's what we suspected he did in this fight." - Rudy Valentino
Last week, B.J. Penn's coach, Rudy Valentino, spoke with Sport's Illustrated's Josh Gross about Georges St. Pierre, alleging that that welterweight champion uses steroids.
St. Pierre, arguably the best-ever welterweight fighter, and Penn, arguably the best-ever lightweight fighter, have encountered each other twice in the Octagon in the 170-lbs. division. The first time was in March 2003, at UFC 58, where St. Pierre took home the victory by split decision. Penn believed that he had won the fight, and did not relent in asking for a rematch to prove that he could beat St. Pierre.
Their second bout took place January 2009, at UFC 94. As St. Pierre was the welterweight titleholder, their rematch was also a title defense. The fight was very much anticipated and hyped as it would ultimately make a change in the welterweight division. However, St. Pierre won decisively, using his wrestling skills to muscle Penn to the mat before unleashing relentless ground-and-pound on the lightweight champion. Penn gave a lackluster performance against St. Pierre's dominating attach. St. Pierre walked away the victor by TKO due to a corner stoppage after the fourth round.
After the fight, Penn accused St. Pierre's cornermen of applying Vaseline to the welterweight's body in order to make him "greasy" and this making it harder for Penn to sink in any submissions. Penn filed more than one complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but no action has been taken.
St. Pierre is currently set to defend his title for the fourth consecutive time against Dan Hardy at UFC 111 on March 27, 2010, in N.J. Since St. Pierre's last fight with Penn, he has also defeated Thiago Alves by unanimous decision at UFC 100 earlier this year in July.
Penn is coming off of a much-praised victory and title defense over Diego Sanchez at UFC 107 earlier this month. Sanchez had long been thought to be the toughest competition for Penn in the lightweight division, however, Penn thwarted his opponent, and won via fifth-round TKO (doctor's stoppage). Prior to his Sanchez victory, Penn also defeated Kenny Florian at UFC 101 in August this year by fourth-round submission.
