The Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre in Boston was host for a number of entertaining fights Thursday night. It was Boston's first nationally televised MMA event. The tournament style format produced two lightweight bouts, a "super fight" involving reigning lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez against Josh Neer, and a heavyweight feature fight.
Alvarez (20-2) shined once again in front of a large crowd, stopping Neer (27-10-1) at 2:08 of round 2 by rear naked choke. Alvarez will now wait to find out who he will defend his title against with the lightweight finals set.
Submission specialist Toby Imada (25-13) earned a spot in the finals with a victory over former All-American wrestling star Carey Vanier (8-3). Vanier pushed the pace in the first round, with crisp stand-up and a couple successful takedowns as well. However, the veteran Imada stayed calm and appeared to be the fresher fighter in round 2. At 3:07, Imada locked in an arm-bar for a submission victory.
By far the fight of the night belonged to Roger Huerta and Pat Curran. The UFC veteran and the 22-year-old rising star engaged in a battle that had the fans on their feet from the get-go. For a full 15 minutes these fighters displayed precise stand-up at an intense pace.
The first round saw Curran land more shots early in the round including right hands and a couple leg kicks. Huerta regained his composure towards the end of the frame, doing some damage in the clinch. Curran did land a right hand as the round concluded.
Huerta appeared to be more aggressive in round 2, landing kicks and a right hand that clearly stunned Curran. "El Matador" stuffed a take-down by his opponent and dolled out some more punishment with his fists. The round ended with both fighters trading shots against the cage, and it appeared as this fight would be decided in the third round.
Both fighters exchanged heavy shots throughout the third round and each was successful on a takedown. The fight ultimately went to the judges scorecards and Pat Curran was awarded an upset victory by unanimous decision (all three judges scored the bout 29-28). Curran Improves to 11-3, and Huerta falls to 21-4-1.
Cole Konrad (3-0) was also victorious in his heavyweight bout against Pat Bennett (1-1). The Minnesota wrestling champion was awarded a unanimous decision (29-26, 29-28, 30-27)
