The Monroe Civic Center in Louisiana was the scene of two entertaining featherweight match ups last night. Joe Warren (4-1) and Patricio Friere (14-0) have moved on to face each other in the Bellator FC Featherweight tournament finals. And reigning middleweight champion Hector Lombard made quick work of his opponent Jay Silva, ending the fight in just 6 seconds.
Warren displayed his superior strength and wrestling by defeating former pro-soccer player Georgi Karakhanyan (13-2). Although Warren controlled the action with consistent take-downs, Karakhanyan found himself with many submission opportunities including armbars and guillotine chokes. Warren weathered those attacks, and was awarded the unanimous victory (all three judges scored it 30-27).
Freire improved upon his unblemished record with a win over former EliteXC champion Wilson Reis (10-2). "Pitbull" chose to utilize his superior stand-up skills to break down his opponent with leg kicks and jabs. Reis was able to score a few take-downs, but the submission specialist was unsuccessful in mounting any significant offense. The result was a unanimous decision in favor of Pitbull, 29-28 on all three judges scorecards.
The featherweight finals showcase a very intriguing match up between an All-American wrestler in Warren, and an undefeated jiu-jitsu black belt in Freire. The winner of that fight will take on current champion Joe Soto for the title.
Lombard (25-2-1) didn't even break a sweat, needing only a two punch combination to the chin of former UFC fighter Jay Silva (5-4) for the KO victory in a blistering 6 seconds. The "super fight" bout was supposed to feature Lombard against Paulo Fihlo. However, the former WEC champ couldn't obtain a work visa in time to make the fight. Lombard's lightning fast victory was his 14th in a row.
