Bellator Fighting Championships week 12 is now officially a wrap and the promotion's first season has come to a conclusion. Eddie Alvarez and Hector Lombard took home the promotion's final two belts last night from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. BFC 12 will air on ESPN Deportes tonight, June 20, via tape delay.
Along with the Bellator middleweight and lightweight title bouts, Bellator FC XII also featured six non-tournament bouts.
In the main event of the evening, Eddie Alvarez became the Bellator FC lightweight world champion by defeating Toby Imada via second-round submission. Both fighters spent much of the first round in the clinch with Imada highlighting the round by throwing some decent knees to the body. But in the second round, Alvarez sent Imada to the mat with a crushing right hook and he immediately followed him to the ground with relentless ground and pound Imada gave up his back to escape the barrage and Alvarez took advantage by sinking in a fight-ending rear-naked choke.
In the other tournament final, Hector Lombard earned a hard fought victory over Jared Hess to pick up the Bellator FC middleweight championship. Lombard took Hess down to start the first round, but Hess was able to make it back to his feet where the two traded shots. Lombard eventually rocked Hess towards the end of the round with a right, which caused Hess' left eye to swell. For most of the second round, Lombard wore Hess with brutal ground and pound after Hess pulled guard in the beginning of the round. Lombard would go on to slam Hess to the mat which was followed by more ground and pound, which opened up a nasty gash in the middle of Hess' forehead. The fight would continue after a referee stopped the fight to check on the cut twice. Hess enter the fourth stanza a bloody mess and Lombard made it worse by taking him down and connecting with several punches. The cageside doctor would go on to stop the fight because of the worsening condition of the gash.
Along with taking taking home the Bellator FC belts, Lombard and Alvarez pocketed a lofty $100,000, which brought their tournament earnings total to a staggering $170,000. Along with the other Bellator champions, Joe Soto and Lyman Good, Lombard and Alvarez will defend their respective belts at end of Bellator's second season against the winner of that season's middleweight and lightweight tourneys.
