Ben Henderson looking to corner Frankie Edgar, ready for a stand-up fight
by Hubert Lau on February 21, 2012

"We have some new tricks that we might unveil for the fight, as far as holding him (Frankie Edgar) on the ground. But holding him there is not our biggest concern; it's getting him there. He's fast. He's light on his feet...So, first thing's first and that's getting our hands on him, cutting off the ring, cornering him to get our hands on him. And then after that, if he pops back up, let him pop back up. If we took him down once, we can take him down again. It's just a matter of cornering him, cutting off the ring and getting our hands on him." - Ben Henderson

Henderson has a puzzle to solve come fight night at UFC 144 and it is in the form of UFC lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, according to mmamania.com.

Although rarely mentioned in the same category as Lyoto Machida or Jon Jones in terms of cunning, Edgar has posed a significant problem for title challengers as well. Namely Edgar's agility has wrecked havoc against BJ Penn and Gray Maynard in their title bids. Edgar's cardio compliments his nonstop fighting style well and Henderson admits being nervous to losing the fight via decision but relents to dealing with it as the fight progresses.

Additionally, Henderson notes Edgar's admirable wrestling skills is comparable to his own. Due to their similar skill set on the ground, Henderson is prepared for a 25 minute stand-up war should the fight go in that direction.

Edgar will be defending his UFC light weight title for the fourth time when he meets Henderson on the main event at UFC 144. This will be Henderson's first UFC title bout. UFC 144 is set for February 26 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event will air live on Saturday, February 25 in North America.

 |  (13) Comments Giada Esposito: Does Henderson always speak about himself in the plural? Wandering_Minstrel: Edgar still wins. :D mike5k: Edgar did out wrestle Maynard. He either stuffed or scrambled out of his shots and he took Gray down several times. What GH said about Henderson's ability to set stuff up by being better on his feet is definitely true. This size advantage is once again significant and Henderson is a seriously quick and agile dude for how big he is. His kicks are a nice bonus if he wants to risk throwing them. This isn't a good match up for Frankie but I picked against Frankie in BOTH Penn fights and I won't do it again. After losing to Gray then almost being killed by him in the first title fight, Gray was obviously a bad match up for him too and we saw how that ended. I give Frankie a few advantages. One is in his team. I'll take Mark Henry, Ricardo Almeida, and Phil Nurse over anybody Henderson's trained with. This team has proven to be able to put together solid game plans and win fights over world class dudes. Henderson has a ton of heart but Frankie's has to be second to none after the Maynard series. Henderson has proven to be very difficult to submit but he's NOT difficult to latch on to. One day his habit of leaving his head or limbs out for submissions will bite him. This could be the time. GO HARD: I dont get how Bendo thinks he can corner frankie and fight him at the same time.... q: 0
