On Aug. 28, 2010, the UFC will travel to Boston, Massachusetts for the very first time.
Fighters like Frank Mir, who is a native of Las Vegas, get to fight in their hometown on a regular basis. But fighters like Kenny Florian, who is from Mass., has never fought in his home state because of legal restrictions. But since the laws changed last month, UFC President Dana White - another Mass. native - jumped at the opportunity to hold an event there.
"It would be a dream come true to be able to fight here in Boston," Florian told The Boston Herald. "It's been a long time coming and finally that it's here, it's wild. It's still not real... To have Boston on board now is a huge step forward for this sport."
While the fight card is clearly unannounced as it is eight-months away, Boston natives, fighters that train in Boston, and other fighters in the north-east are looking to be on the card in August.
"All the Boston fighters, we never thought we'd fight for the UFC in Boston," said John Howard. "This is big for us. I know Dana White is happy. It's his hometown. I know he's going to do it right. He's going to blow it out of the water. He's going to put the right fighters in there and it's going to be a great show. I just hope to be a part of history. To be a part of that would be such an honor."
Some fighters are organizing their 2010 year in order to be able to be placed on the Boston card. In their plan, they need to not be coming off of a win/loss recently, and need to have trained for the fight.
"It definitely helps having a date," said Joe Lauzon. "The plan for me is definitely to get this fight out of the way, come out with a win and come out healthy, and then fight again in March or April, and have a little more time to get ready for August. I can't wait to get on that card."
