A light-heavyweight bout between Brandon Vera and Jon Jones will headline the first of two live UFC events to be televised on Versus.
The clause that states two UFC events must be shown on Versus in 2010 is a part of the new WEC/Versus contract. The clause does not interfere with the UFC's regular network home, Spike TV, as the promotion has the option of airing up to four of their events on networks other than Spike TV.
The other live UFC event airing on Versus will take place later in the year, as the two events must be shown over a twelve-month period.
News of the match up was first revealed by Vera himself in a post on his official Twitter account last Tuesday night, however, the message was deleted shortly thereafter. Sherdog.com first reported that the event would be aired live on Versus.
The as of yet unannounced event takes place on March 21 in Denver, Colorado.
Vera was originally set to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 109 on Feb. 6, however, Nogueira was forced off of the event with a fractured ankle. Jones was set to replace Nogueira and face Vera at UFC 109, however Jones' camp reportedly asked for the fight to be pushed back to March because Jones' wife recently gave birth to a baby girl.
Jones (9-1) is coming off a disqualification loss against Matt Hamill at TUF 10 finale earlier this month. He was disqualified for landing numerous illegal "12-to-6" elbow strikes on his opponent, however, many were impressed with his dominant performance over Hamill prior to the stoppage. His camp is currently appealing the loss, which was his first career defeat.
Vera (11-4) is fresh off of a controversial unanimous decision loss against Randy Couture in the main event of last month's UFC 105: "Couture vs. Vera" event. Prior to the loss, he had won two-straight bouts in 2009 against Mike Patt and Krzysztof Soszynski.
