Brandon Vera vs. Jon Jones under discussion for March 31 in Denver
by Jacob Camargo on December 16, 2009

A light-heavyweight bout between Brandon Vera and Jon Jones is in the works to take place at an as of yet officially unannounced UFC Fight Night event on March 31 in Denver, Colorado.

News of the bout comes from Vera himself on his official Twitter account, however, he later deleted the message within a hour and a half.

"just found out I'm firing Jon Bones Jones on March 21st in Denver Colorado," Vera wrote. "hope u heard it here first!!!!"

Vera was originally set to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 109 on Feb. 6, however, Nogueira was forced off of the event with a fractured ankle, as reported late Tuesday night. Vera was thought to have still been in the organizations plans for the UFC 109 event, however, the UFC looks to have bigger plans for him.

Vera (11-4) most recently suffered a unanimous decision loss against Randy Couture at UFC 105 last month. Prior to the loss, he won two straight bouts against Mike Patt and Krzysztof Soszynski. Vera has put together a 7-4 UFC record during his four-year tenure with the promotion, scoring notable Octagon wins over the likes of Assuerio Silva, Frank Mir and Fabiano Scherner; while suffering hard fought UFC losses against Keith Jardine, Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum.

Vera has spent the majority of his seven-year career with the UFC, fighting 11 of his 15 career bouts with MMA's premier organization. He has finished eight of his 11 career wins including seven by TKO or KO.

Jones most recently suffered the first defeat of his young career in his last bout when he was dealt a disqualification loss against Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale earlier this month. He was putting on a dominant performance against Hamill before he was disqualified for landing numerous illegal downward elbows on his opponent. His camp is currently appealing the loss.

Prior to the loss against Hamill, Jones had won the first nine bouts of his career including his first three UFC fights against Andre Gusmao, Stephan Bonnar and Jake O'Brien. He has finished seven of his nine career wins, including five by TKO or KO.
