The California-based Strikeforce organization has bolstered its talented and stacked lightweight division with the recent signing of Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro to a multi-fight contract.
MMAjunkie.com confirmed the signing with Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz. Terms of Ribeiro's deal with Strikeforce were not disclosed and it is not yet known when he will make his debut.
According to the report, Ribeiro would like to make his promotional debut on the Nov. 6 CBS Strikeforce: "Emelianenko vs. Rogers" card or possibly at a Showtime televised event in Dec.
Ribeiro will look to make an immediate impact in Strikeforce's stacked lightweight division as he will be possibly be competing against the likes of Billy Evangelista, Lyle Beerbohm, UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel, Nam Phan and Mitsuhiro Ishida. At the top of the Strikeforce lightweight division are Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson and Strikeforce interim lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez.
Most recently, Ribeiro has lost two of his last three bouts and he was defeated by Shinya Aoki in his last bout at DREAM 10 in July. He previously defeated Katsuhiko Nagata at DREAM 8 in his lone victory during the streak and before then he was defeated by Gesias Cavalcante. During his eight-year career, Ribeiro has fought for such promotions as the WFA, HOOKnSHOOT, Shooto and Cage Rage.
"Shaolin" has put together a 20-3 MMA record since turning pro in Nov. 2001, with 14 of his wins coming by stoppage, including 11 by submision, and he holds notable wins over the likes of Joachim Hansen, Eiji Mitsuoka, Abdul Mohamed, Daisuke Nakamura, Jean Silva and Mitsuhiro Ishida. Besides the aforementioned losses to Aoki and Cavalcante, his third career loss came against Tatsuya Kawajiri in 2004.
