Brendan Schaub: "Beating Nogueira in Brazil makes a pretty good argument for a title shot"
by Hubert Lau on August 18, 2011

UFC heavyweight, Brendan Schaub, believes that a win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 134 would earn him a title shot according to mmamania.com.

"He's confident in his jiu-jitsu and he should be. He's one of the best in the world with jiu-jitsu, so in my opinion, there's no disrespect in anything he said. I'm very confident with my boxing, and he's confident in his grappling. So we'll see how it plays out and who's tougher," Schaub said.

Ever since losing The Ultimate Fighter season 10 to Roy Nelson, Schaub has been on a roll in the heavyweight division. He is currently on a four fight win streak and in his last fight he KO'ed Mirko Filipovic. Now he has his sights set on another former Pride star in Nogueira.

"If I get a good 'W' I think I'll be next in line for a title shot. Look, going out there to Brazil and beat Nogueira in his homeland is something that Cain, Frank Mir or Fedor never did. So yeah, I think that beating Nogueira in Brazil makes a pretty good argument for a title shot, not speaking about the fact that it's going to be my fifth consecutive victory" Schaub added.

For Nogueira, his upcoming fight with Schaub would be his first in over a year. During his layoff, Nogueira has been addressing health issues in his hips and knees. His last bout was against current heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, at UFC 110 where he loss via KO.

In his last two losses Nogueira has been stopped, a feat unheard of earlier in his career which has led some to question Nogueira's continued ability to compete at a top level.

"I think Nogueira will have a tough time dealing with my speed. I'll knock him out in round two," Schaub said.

UFC 134 on August 27 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be headlined by a middleweight title match between Anderson Silva defending against Yushin Okami. Schaub and Nogueira are battling on the main card as well.

 |  (31) Comments GO HARD: no brendan,,, it actually doesnt. SicJits: No way does beating today's Nog earn you a shot....no matter where you beat him:rolleyes: seedheadondatrak: If its true they are signing Overeem. It'll probably be Mir vs Overeem for the next shot. Schaub probably has at least 2 more to win. Giada Esposito: Wow, so Schaub thinks beating an old, past his prime Nog in Brazil puts him in the same category as Fedor, Mir, and Velasquez, and that it should be enough for a title shot. What a tool. I really hope now that Nog ties him in a knot. Hizoka: how does beating a guy who no longer has it = title shot??? Nog WAS one og the greats, but his time has passed sadly... beating him has no real meaning other then he had to be old and busted for Shaub to beat him Wandering_Minstrel: I hope Nog subs him in the first. snuff: I'm callinga flying gogoplata Nog. 1st round. seedheadondatrak: I just hope he doesnt try to box tooooooo long. Get it down and sub him. Cryptic_Soldier: NO schaub you need wins over guys above the Dude who KTFO'd you. Beating Crocop on his way out after a good back and forth on the feet with you getting the lucky shot... Your string of can wins needs to be looked at: Chris Tuchscherer: 4-4 in his last 8 ending a 17-0 streak outside the UFC... Inside the UFC he's 1-3 Gabriel Gonzaga 3-5 in his last 8 fights.. those 3 w's also over lower level HWs. Cro Cop 4-4-1 in last 8 fights... 3-3 in his most recent run with the UFC, W's over Al Terk who is 6-6 overall and Perosh 11-6 overall making his UFC Debut, and Barry 3-3 in in the UFC.... Chase Gormley: 7-4 overall and 1-4 in his last 5 fights... How does beating those guys plus Nog who has been KO'd twice in a row warrent a title fight? Cryptic_Soldier: you win
