Brian Stann to make middleweight debut against Mike Massenzio at UFC on Versus 2
by Jacob Camargo on May 05, 2010

Former WEC light-heavyweight champion Brian Stann will make the plunge down to the middleweight division for the first time in his career, and his first opponent at the new weight class will be Mike Massenzio at UFC on Versus 2 in August.

The bout was first reported by Heavy.com on Tuesday evening.

Stann (8-3) most recently suffered an unanimous decision loss to Phil Davis in his last bout as a light-heavyweight at UFC 109 in February. He previously won two straight bouts against Steve Cantwell in their rubbermatch and Rodney Wallace. Stann sports an even 2-2 UFC record, with his only other UFC loss coming against Krzysztof Soszynski in his Octagon debut.

Prior to joining the UFC, Stann had put together a 5-1 record with the WEC, scoring notable wins in the organization against Doug Marshall and Steve Cantwell (in their very first match up), while suffering his only WEC loss against Cantwell in their second fight. He has finished all of his eight career wins, including six by TKO or KO.

The very injury prone Massenzio (11-3) was set to make his Octagon return after more then a year layoff against Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night 20 in January, however, he was forced off of the card with an undisclosed injury.

Massenzio hasn't fought since UFC 92 in December 2008, where he was defeated by CB Dollaway. He spent the majority of 2009 recuperating from neck and knee injuries. Prior to his loss at UFC 92, Massenzio was victorious in his UFC debut defeating Drew McFedries via first-round submission at UFC Fight Night 15 last September.

Massenzio has fought the majority of his five-year career with Reality Fighting and Ring of Combat, fighting a combined 10 of his 14 career bouts with the two East coast promotions. He has scored stoppage victories in seven of his 11 career wins and holds notable career victories over the likes of Dante Rivera and Dan Miller.

Though not officially announced, UFC on Versus 2 is expected to take place on August 1 at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it will be the promotion's first ever event in the state.

Other bouts rumored to take place on the card so far include a light-heavyweight bout between fast rising phenom Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko, a lightweight scrap between Takanori Gomi and Joe Stevenson, and a welterweight contest between rising prospects Jake Ellenberger and John Howard.

 |  (4) Comments The Hitman: A smart move for Stann. LHW is too strong right now for him to become a contender. There is a huge drop in competition between these 2 weightclasses IMO. Wandering_Minstrel: Hmmm... could be a good scrap. Storm: funny thing is that Massenzio is a good wrestler and can put Stann down.
