Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez set for UFC 121
by Jacob Camargo on July 09, 2010

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar's next title defense against Cain Velasquez is now set to take place at October's as-of-yet announced UFC 121 event in Velasquez's home state of California.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news to MMA Fighting Friday night.

Lesnar vs. Velasquez was originally rumored to take place at UFC 119 on September 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana. However, Dana White shot down those rumors earlier this week and said the fight would take place at a later date.

The title fight was likely pushed back due to the impending birth of Lesnar's next child with his wife Rena "Sable" Lesnar.

Lesnar (5-1) recently unified the UFC heavyweight title, as he scored a stunning second-round submission win over then-undefeated interim champion Shane Carwin at UFC 116 on July 3. The arm-triangle choke submission win earned Lesnar an extra $75,000, as he was awarded the "Submission of the Night" bonus.

It was Lesnar's first fight since UFC 100 in July 2009, where he defeated Frank Mir to become the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. He was sidelined over that time period with a serious, life-threatening bout with diverticulitis, which is an intestinal disorder.

Lesnar has put together a 4-1 record during his time with the UFC, scoring other Octagon wins over Heath Herring and Randy Couture; while suffering his only UFC and career loss to Frank Mir in his UFC debut in February 2008.

Velasquez was tapped as the next challenger to the UFC heavyweight title prior to the aforementioned UFC 116 event by company President Dana White. He hasn't fought since defeating MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira via first round TKO at UFC 110 in February.

Since debuting with the UFC in April 2008, Velasquez has put together a 6-0 mark with the promotion, scoring other Octagon wins over Brad Morris, Jake O' Brien, Denis Stojnic, Cheick Kongo and Ben Rothwell.

Velasquez sports an overall 8-0 professional MMA record, picking up his other two career victories in the now-defunct Bodog Fight and Strikeforce. The American Kickboxing Academy standout has finished all but one of his eight wins by TKO or KO.

UFC 121 is expected to take place on October 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and the event's main card will air live on Pay-Per-View. The last time the UFC held an event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Keith Jardine scored an upset win over Chuck Liddell in the main event of UFC 76 in September 2007.

 |  (22) Comments EverlastingSpringtime: Awesome :D Wandering_Minstrel: Compared to the other Champions, I'd say this was a pretty quick turnaround. On a side note, I would not want to be Cain Velasquez right now. Tonika Fatale: Atleast he is not taking another year off:rolleyes: D_V: Weird. So much Cain doubt. All I'm saying is don't anybody be shocked when Cain completely dominates Brock. I know people don't like to believe me but he's going to spank Lesnar. The Hitman: Brock is going to walk right through Cain. StompGrind: I think it's only a matter of time before Brock takes him down and smashes all that cardio right out of him. Then it will just be downhill for Cain the rest of the fight. Brock will either have to finish him fast or do so much damage that Cain isn't Cain anymore or he'll have to keep a steady grinding pace but not so much he gasses. If Cain defends well and doesn't take much damage Lesnar will be in the same shoes as Carwin against himself. I'll say if it gets past the 2nd and Cain hasn't taken much damage he will take Brock out. I can't count Cain out but I'd give something like 60/40 for Brock. I just don't see him hurting Lesnar and I don't see him stopping Brock's takedown. He drives through like ten yards and I just don't see Cain stopping that and I think Lesnar will have corrected his mistakes from the Carwin fight. Gonna be a good fight looking forward to it. Mickey knox: I think Cain can win this, it's gonna be interesting to see how though. My hate for Lesnar is well documented, but he has gained my respect. At 116 he had alot more class and actually showed his opponent some respect, he also showed that he's about as tough as he is strong. Lesnar's a pretty big obstacle for Cain to get past, and I had more stock in Carwin than I do for Cain, but I'll still be pulling for him. Everyone says that Carwin/Lesnar proved that Lesnar's got a great chin, I disagree. I think it just showed that Lesnar can be knocked out, and would have been KO'd had it not been for the 85% of the punches thrown in the first round not connecting. Cain's alot faster than Carwin or Lesnar, and I would'nt be too surprised if Cain rocked him and was more carefull than Carwin in the finishing process. Wandering_Minstrel: I give Cain a 50/50 shot at beating Lesnar. Cain is very fast, is VERY active on the ground, and has very crisp, technical standup. He's got a solid chin and he can handle pressure. He's also a cardio machine. I stand by what I said before, Cain Velasquez is a legit threat to Brock Lesnar. horizontalcracker: After watching Primetime I believe that Lesnar potentially doesn't have the training camp to make him be his absolute best. I say this mostly because it's some podunk organization out in the middle of nowhere and I have no hard evidence but I just don't find it likely that he's getting the most out of being there as he is anywhere else. The training of his they showed so far was a bunch of weight-lifting and him wrestling with the big guys at his camp. This just might just be how the editing was done, maybe Brock didn't want them showing his stand-up and maybe him lifting a lot of weight is good for pay-per view buys. Either way, I think Cain definitely has the camp advantage here. IwishIwasMMA: Well.. BL could always move to Britain and train with... excuse me "train" with Wolfslair. horizontalcracker: I'll sig bet that Cain beats JDS anyday, WHO IS DOWN
