Among the fighters considered, BJ Penn and Anthony Pettis are said to be atop the list. The reason for such a move stems from Melendez's lack of a future matchup, having defeated Jorge Masvidal in his last bout in December of 2011.
"Melendez's situation is complex right now. We still don't have an opponent, date or place set...They said he could fight in San Jose but it'll probably change. They mentioned Josh Thomson but then said it was not going to happen," Gracie said.
Although a matchup between Melendez against Penn or Pettis will solve Melendez's current predicament as well as providing Strikeforce with a marquee matchup, Gracie admits the matchup boils down to Dana White's relationship with Showtime.
"I spoke to Joe Silva (UFC's matchmaker) and he told me maybe some UFC fighters will go to Strikeforce. We would really like to see him fighting Pettis or BJ, but we are still not sure about what's going to happen," Gracie said.
