Undefeated featherweight title challenger, Chad Mendes, is confident in his wrestling as he prepares for Jose Aldo at UFC 142 according to mmaweekly.com.
"The Aldo camp saying I am not ready for a title shot? They don't know how good I am. They've never fought me or trained with me. I am very, very ready for this title shot. He has great takedown defense, but my type of shot is a ‘blast-you-off-your-feet' type of shot," Mendes said.
There is no question that the three time defending UFC featherweight champion, Aldo, is the favored heading into the bout in an event held in his native Brazil. Aldo also has fought in nearly twice as many fights Mendes has. But as Mendes points out, all those factors simply add to Aldo's pressure for winning the fight.
"He's the one with the pressure. He's the champ. He's the headliner in his own town, while I am the up-and-comer, the underdog. There's no pressure on me," Mendes said.
Mendes sports a flawless 11-0 record and holds unanimous decision wins over notables in Rani Yahya and Michihiro Omigawa. Mendes is a member of the Sacramento-based Team Alpha Male. In fact one of his valued assets is teammate and former featherweight champion, Urijah Faber. Faber fought Aldo to a unanimous decision loss at WEC 48, unable to reclaim his title. For Mendes, he uses Faber's experience with Aldo in his favor.
"When Urijah fought him, we didn't red-flag his leg kicks, but obviously we have prepared for that in this fight...Other fighters have stood there and let him take them apart; I think I will get in there and get my hands on him. No one else he's fought has my level of wrestling, to where I will get him down and keep him down," Mendes said.
UFC 142 is set for January 14 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Will Aldo be able to defend his title for the fourth time against the rising up-and-comer Mendes?
