With Jose Aldo out until September or October, Chad Mendes (10-0) has agreed to face Rani Yahya (16-6) at UFC 133, according to MMAJunkie.com.
UFC 133 is scheduled for August 6 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Chad Mendes was pegged as the next challenger to Jose Aldo's belt at UFC 133 but lingering injuries have pushed back Aldo's return to the cage. Aldo is currently rehabbing some minor injuries and resting after his fight with Mark Hominick at UFC 129. The injuries would not allow Aldo to compete until September or October and Mendes was unwilling to sit around and wait.
Instead the Team Alpha Male product will put his undefeated record on the line against Rani Yahya. Once a one dimensional wrestler, Mendes has greatly expanded his skill set over his past few experiences. His stand up has continued to improve and he has become increasingly more confident in his Jiu-Jitsu. Mendes most recently squared off with Michirio Omigawa at UFC 126. He out-struck, out-wrestled and out-grappled the Japanese import en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Rani Yahya is coming off of his most impressive victory to date, a unanimous decision over former featherweight title holder Mike Thomas Brown. It righted a two fight losing skid for the Brazilian. It also marked Yahya's return to the featherweight division after a failed attempt in the bantamweight division. Yahya is a skilled submission fighter, once winning three straight Submission of the Night bonuses with the WEC.
UFC 133 is headlined by a light heavyweight tilt between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis.
