A featherweight bout between veteran Anthony Morrison and undefeated prospect Chad Mendes is reportedly in the works for the un-aired preliminary portion of the WEC 48 card after Morrison's original opponent Mackens Semerzier was forced off of the event due to an undisclosed injury.
Mendes made a successful WEC debut in his last bout, as he defeated previously unbeaten Erik Koch at WEC 47 last month. The Team Alpha Male teammate of former WEC feather champion Urijah Faber has put together a 6-0 MMA record since turning pro in September of 2008, with three of those wins coming by stoppage.
Mendes' five previous wins came under the now-defunct Palace Fighting Championship and the aforementioned Tachi Palace Fights.
Morrison (15-8) is coming off of a first round submission loss to former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown in his WEC debut also at January's WEC 46 event. He previously won two straight bouts against Jeff Lentz and UFC veteran Alvin Robinson.
Morrison has competed for a slew of other notable promotions during his four-year career such as; Ring of Fire, Ring of Combat, Art of Fighting, Shine Fights, Cage Fury Fighting Championships and the Virginia-based Combat Sports Challenge. He has finished 11 of his 15 career wins and holds other notable career wins over Kevin Roddy, Aaron Steele and Dan Swift.
WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" takes place on April 24 at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., and the event's main card will be televised live on Pay-Per-View, which will be the promotion's PPV debut. The event is headlined by a WEC featherweight championship bout between champion Jose Aldo and challenger Urijah Faber.
In addition, WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson will take on Donald Cerrone in a rematch from their previous "Fight of the Year" candiate effort at WEC 43 in October. Also, former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown will look to get back on the winning track against the streaking Manny Gamburyan.
