Chad Mendes vs. Erik Koch set for WEC 47
by Jacob Camargo on January 27, 2010

Featherweight prospects Chad Mendes and Erik Koch have verbally agreed to face each other on the un-aired preliminary portion of WEC 47 in March, according to a report from MMAWeekly.com.

Mendes, who trains out of Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male, will be joining two other teammates also fighting at WEC 47, including Joseph Benavidez and Danny Castillo.

Mendes, who signed with the WEC in October, is a highly touted prospect with a strong wrestling pedigree. The two-time All-American wrestler out of California Polytechnic State University was a NCAA Division I wrestling runner-up in the 141-pound weight division in 2008.

Mendes went a perfect 4-0 in 2009 and most recently defeated veteran Mike Joy at Tachi Palace Fights 1 in October. He has put together a 5-0 MMA record since turning pro in September of 2008, with three of those wins coming by stoppage. He won all five of his bouts for Palace Fighting Championship and the aforementioned Tachi Palace Fights.

Koch made a successful WEC debut in his last bout, scoring a unanimous decision win over Jameel Massouh at WEC 45 in December. Like his opponent, he also enters the bout with a perfect record at 8-0. Six of his wins have come by stoppage including five by submission.

Koch has fought for other notable promotions during his young two-year career such as Mainstream MMA, Midwest Cage Championship and Xtreme Fighting Organization. He holds other notable career wins over Tyler Combs, Eric Wisely and Joe Pearson.

WEC 47 takes place on March 6 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio and the event's main card will air live on Versus. Headlining the event is a WEC bantamweight title bout between current champion Brian Bowles and challenger Dominick Cruz.
