Chael Sonnen calls Mark Coleman a "bum"
by Giada Esposito on February 03, 2010

You can call Chael Sonnen many things these days, but subtle is not one of them.

Following an interview last week where he tore into UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, Sonnen, a top UFC middleweight prospect himself, has made his feelings known about UFC light-heavyweight Mark Coleman. Coleman will be facing fellow veteran Randy Couture this weekend at UFC 109, in the main event of a card that will also feature a bout between Sonnen and Nate Marquardt.

Just why Sonnen has chosen the run-up to UFC 109 to air his grievances with other fighters in the UFC is unclear, but what was clear were Sonnen's feelings about Coleman and the way he trains when he spoke to Pro MMA Radio.

"Even though Mark Coleman is a bum, he wins fights," Sonnen said. "Who's Mark Coleman's coach? Who is Mark Coleman's training partner? What is the name of the gym that he trains at? And don't tell me the Hammer House. I want to know an actual building, an actual piece of real estate with a sign on it. Where does he train? Everybody has a coach. Tiger Woods has a coach. Michael Jordan had a coach. Mayweather has a coach. Mark Coleman does not have a coach. Everybody has a team. Everybody has a team backing them. Tiger Woods has a team. Kobe has a team. All the greats have a team of any sport. He doesn't have a team! He's his own coach, he's his own team. He doesn't even have a gym he belongs to. That's just silly. How you could be in this for this long and be a one man show. On one hand (it) is remarkable. On one hand, maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe I need to compliment him a little bit, but it's just silly. That's not what a dedicated guy does."

Mark Coleman, who holds a career record of 17-9, was the first UFC heavyweight champion and is a member of the UFC Hall-of-Fame. He most recently defeated Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100.

 |  (36) Comments thug4less: Sonnen must be drinking Haterade from DV's source or something. Man. Natalia Baage: :p I can't help it, I like Sonnen... even if he is talking a lot these days. :o D_V: sonnen is now the crap talking master of mma. he's not really that good at it but it's giving him the attention he wants so what the hell? i happen to agree with most of his crap talk so i have to say that i'm starting to like him too. i hated him before, because if the filho thing. i think he handled it poorly. the guy wasn't fit to fight and mailed him the belt anyways so quite crying. but i like him now. i think he loses to nate but it'll be closer than alot of people believe. JujitsWho: He's just trying to get his name out there..........maybe he's decided that playing the villian will make his stock rise. People are talking about him now more than ever, even if its bad. Whether fans love him or hate him, he is on their minds now which is a good thing for a fighter. Being the villian can make you a huge draw at times. People want to see you lose and will pay money to tune in and see it.........which will make Dana LOVE him, and thats probably his goal with all this anyway. Why be the "nice guy" with a lot of talent thats fighting midcard or prelim fights when you can play the heel and be near the top or possibly in main event/ co- main event I really don't care what the guy says. I like Sonnan, and its not like he's saying a bunch of shit thats untrue anyway. He's simpling calling them out on the shit Mickey knox: Could just be me, but I think Sonnen is just an attention hungry retard. I think he's worried about how he's gonna move back up to title contention after Nate knocks his head off, so alls he can do now is bark at the camera in the hopes that he'll get enough publicity for Dana to give him another big name fight after he gets destroyed by Marquardt. I think he should be more concerend about his up coming fight, and less concerened about the personal exploits of other random fighters. Mickey knox: He can deffinitely fight, I just think he needs to put himself in a position to talk before he starts unloading with the smack talk. It makes him look like a fool imo. fingerssfv: Well, Chael speaks his mind. Before criticizing him, pay attention to what he says. It does make sense. This guy doesn't talk just because he's stupid, because stupid, he's not. He is very educated, and he gets prodded into saying things out of context, although oftentimes what he states does have their own merit. One thing about Chael is he will not back away from any fighter. His record shows that. He may have 20 some odd wins, but he also have 10 losses. He loves being on top (in the guard does not bother him) but he takes too many chances, and a good fighter will submit Chael, if he is not careful. When was Sonnen KO'd? Paulo is a nobody? Dan Miller is a nobody? Yoshi Okama isa nobody? I've never seen him fight any nobody. He fights tough opponents. Damien Maia is a nobody? You don't even know Chael Sonnen. GO HARD: sonnen is gonna look dumb when nate hands it to his ass... even tho i like nate alot, part of me wants sonnen to win so we can see him get killed by the greatest champ ever in the ufc, anderson silva. sonnen has poor choice of words... coleman a bum?? smh Little_Kang: Man Chael is shooting his mouth off alot lately. He better not lose anytime soon because the ufc is more then willing to give him the boot The Hitman: sonnen has been opening his mouth alot lately. he shouldnt because there are too many fighters that can shut it Castle: He's taking the Diaz approach now days. Hey if the one man army thing works for Coleman then good for him. Sonnen should just focus on himself and his upcoming match with Marquardt. IwishIwasMMA: oh no! he called mark coleman a bitch basically who does not train very hard. He also has been struggling in his career since Pride.. If I were Sonnen I would be terrified after calling out a SHOULD BE retired MMA fighter who has basically nothing left in his career to look forward too. If there was a catchweight fight, it would last about as long as it takes to read this statement. Sonnen would more than likely outwrestle and possibly kill Coleman Jason Lee: Sonnen needs to worry less about Coleman and Silva, and a bit more about Marquardt. Mtx: Sonnen is getting his ass kicked today...YAY :D Giada Esposito: Did anyone notice how quiet the crowd was when Sonnen walked out for the weigh-ins? I don't think he got one cheer. GO HARD: sonnen is a bumm
